Sonys PlayStation buys Bungie, game studio with Xbox ties - Business Standard

PlayStation-maker Sony is escalating its competition with Xbox-maker Microsoft by buying the video game studio behind one of Xbox's hit games.

Sony Interactive Entertainment said Monday it would spend $3.6 billion to buy Bungie Inc, an independent game publisher based in Bellevue, Washington. Bungie makes the popular game franchise Destiny and was the original developer of Xbox-owned Halo.

Microsoft bought Bungie in 2000, but later spun off the game studio in 2007 while retaining intellectual property rights to the Halo franchise.

Sony is one of the world's biggest video game companies, but Microsoft has been ramping up its ambitions, most recently by announcing plans to buy high-profile game publisher Activision Blizzard for USD 68.7 billion. Acquiring the owner of titles like Call of Duty and Candy Crush would immediately put Microsoft ahead of Nintendo as the third-biggest company in global sales, behind Japan's Sony and Chinese tech giant Tencent.

Xbox's top executive, Phil Spencer, told news site Axios last year that we've learned a lot since letting go of Bungie. Spencer on Monday tweeted his congratulations to for adding a talented team" to its game studios.

Bungie started in Chicago in 1991 and made its early hits, such as Myth and Marathon, for personal computers. It now employs about 900 people and is based not far from Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Sony's video game division is centered in San Mateo, California.

Is WhatsApp crashing after Android and iPhone update? Fix bug this way - HT Tech

WhatsApp for Android and iPhone users crashed when they tried to access the app or send media after downloading the latest update. Here's how to resolve it.

WhatsApp had released the beta for Android of two versions - 2.22.4.6 and 2.22.4.7, which were reportedly affected by an unexplained bug that led them to crash when users tried to open the app or share photos or videos. However, according to the latest information from WABetaInfo, the Meta-owned messaging app has released a fix for the bug that caused it to crash. The latest WhatsApp update includes the fix to the crashing bug only and does not reveal the cause of the problem.

When installing the 2.21.24.11 update on WhatsApp beta for Android, some users experienced constant crashes on Android 12. As a result, WhatsApp users are advised to back up their data on Google Drive before updating to the latest version of the beta update. This way WhatsApp users can prevent their data from being lost. Another solution for users who are facing the WhatsApp crashing bug is to revert to the older version by keeping their existing data saved. So, here’s the step-by-step guide for you to move back to the previous version of WhatsApp.

Move to the older version of WhatsApp beta on iPhone

iOS users can easily revert to the older version of WhatsApp beta without the need for a third-party app. You will need to use TestFlight to do so. Here's how:

  • Go to TestFlight
  • Then select WhatsApp Messenger
  • Click on Previous builds
  • Install a previous beta build and you will be easily moved to the older version of the WhatsApp beta
  • Do remember to back up your chat history before changing installing or changing the WhatsApp version.

Move to an older version of WhatsApp beta on Android

Users on Android need to manually delete the current beta version and install the old one via APKMirror, however, a backup of your chat history is required to restore it. Here's how to move back to the older version of WhatsApp.

  • Go to www.apkmirror.com in your web browser. Search WhatsApp in the search bar, which will give you the list of available versions of WhatsApp.
  • Tap on the Download button in front of the version that you need to download.
  • Scroll down and click on 'See available APKS'. This will give you a list of available downloading options.
  • Tap the version that you want to download.
  • Scroll down and click on the 'Download APK' option.
  • Go to your downloads on your smartphone and open the downloaded app.
  • Tap the WhatsApp APK file you just downloaded. A confirmation message will pop up, you just need to tap 'Yes'.
  • Open WhatsApp and set up the initial requirements.

PlayStation State of Play Announced for February 2, Will Showcase Gran Turismo 7 Gameplay Footage - Gadgets 360

Sony has announced its PlayStation State of Play and it is confirmed to stream later this week. The upcoming State of Play will focus majorly on Gran Turismo 7. Sony is expected to show around half an hour of gameplay footage of the upcoming racing simulator from Polyphony Digital. Gran Turismo 7 is slated to release in March and, as usual, will be a PlayStation exclusive. The racing simulator will be the eighth title in the popular Gran Turismo franchise.

Through a blog post, Sony announced that its latest PlayStation State of Play event will stream on February 2 at 2pm PT (3:30am IST on February 3). As per the announcement, the event will showcase 30 minutes of gameplay footage of the upcoming Gran Turismo 7 on PlayStation 5. State of Play will be streamed on the official Twitch and YouTube channels. Along with the gameplay footage, the stream will show game modes and features of the popular racing simulator.

PlayStation's State of Play generally showcases gameplay footage from a number of PlayStation exclusive titles as well as some third-party titles. The event is generally 20 minutes long. Since the blog post mentions that it will show 30 minutes of gameplay of Gran Turismo 7, it is safe to assume that the upcoming event will be a longer-than-usual affair.

Gran Turismo 7 is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation consoles on March 4. The game returns with its Campaign mode and will now be set in Europe — paying a tribute to the roots of the 17th century term "Gran Turismo". The upcoming Polyphony Digital racing title will see two of its tracks — Trial Mountain and High-Speed Ring — making a comeback. The racing simulator is also expected to expand its car designing tool, car photography tool, car tuning, as well as car collection.

Using public WiFi? Beware! Hackers can spy on your iPhone - HT Tech

Using public Wi-Fi on your iPhone could make you the 'perfect target' for hackers. However, you can secure your data with a simple and easy trick.

Cybercriminals are discovering new ways to steal our data, even on iPhones and one of the shocking ways is via public Wi-Fi. Connecting an iPhone to a public wifi might land you into trouble as this can expose your data. They lack adequate security measures and encryption needed to protect a smartphone user's data. In some of the cases, public Wi-Fi has even been set up by hackers themselves to trap potential victims.

There are a number of methods to target a smartphone user over public Wi-Fi.

Hackers usually opt two ways - first 'man-in-the-middle' (MITM) attack, and the other is a 'packet sniffing' attack. In an MITM attack, a malicious third-party intercepts communications between two participants to steal data while in a 'packet sniffing' attack, a hacker acquires airborne information accessed via Wi-Fi.

Hackers can steal your important data right from email login, bank details, personal photos and videos, to home address. However you can avoid the situation and protect your phone from being exposed to hackers by using a VPN.

Here’s how you can protect yourself while using free, public Wi-Fi, using a VPN.

What is a VPN?

VPN- a virtual private network (VPN) provides a private network across a public network, enabling users to safely access the internet to share and receive data without being exposed to the prying eyes of malicious third parties.

A VPN network works by scrambling the user's personal information and hence, it can't be read by hackers without the correct decryption key.

Having a VPN app on your iPhone will protect your data from any and all Wi-Fi networks that your phone connects to. However there are several VPN service providers out there making it difficult for iPhone users to pick the right one. Here’s how you can select the right VPN for you.

How to select the right VPN for iPhone?

While choosing a VPN you must keep some important factors in your mind. Always look for strong encryption, ample security features, and good customer support to select the right VPN for your iPhone.

Also, always pay attention to a well-known or obscure VPN, as that could determine the type of service they will provide.

Weekly poll: which one of the new Redmi Note 11 models is your favorite? - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

The new Redmi Note 11 series was unveiled earlier this week and it already went through a limited sale (an early bird deal with $20-30 worth of discounts). Did you get one? Will you get one once the phones become widely available and which one? That’s what we want to know this week.

The Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G fills a 5G-shaped hole in the Note series. There was a Note 10 5G last year, but that was more of a mid-range offering and not a Pro. Anyway, the Note 11 Pro 5G is mostly identical to its 4G-only sibling with the key difference being the Snapdragon 695 chipset.

Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

Compared to last year’s Pro, the 11-series entries offer a brighter display charging that’s almost twice as fast – the 67W charger (included in the box) needs 15 minutes for a 0-50% charge.

Redmi Note 11 Pro Redmi Note 11 Pro

One thing that has changed since the 10-series is the pricing. The Redmi Note 10 Pro (Max) started at $280 (6/64GB) and higher specced models went up to $330 (8/128GB). The 4G version of the 11 Pro starts at $300 (6/64GB) and goes up to $350 (8/128GB). And if you want the 5G version instead, add $30 on top of those prices.

Pricing info: Redmi Note 11 Pro Pricing info: Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G
Pricing info: Redmi Note 11 Pro • Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G

That’s not ideal considering that the Helio G96 chipset inside the Redmi Note 11 Pro (4G) is not strictly faster than the Snapdragon 732G it aims to replace (the GPU is its main weak point). We don’t have benchmarks of the Snapdragon 695 yet and while we’re excited to test its power efficiency, we noticed a downgrade – the chip doesn’t support 4K recording, while the 732G (and the Note 10 Pro it powered) did handle 4K at 30 fps.

Redmi Note 11S Redmi Note 11S

Let’s move on to the vanilla series. Its upgrades over the Note 10 models include a higher refresh rate (90 Hz, but still) and new cameras – including the same 108 MP sensor (ISOCELL HM2) as the Pro phones. With 9-in-1 binning it has a larger effective pixel size for low-light shooting and natively supports zooming up to 3x.

Redmi Note 11 Redmi Note 11

Surprisingly, prices have fallen, at least in the case of the Redmi Note 11, which starts at $180 for a 4/64GB unit (and this is if you missed the early bird deal) and goes up to $230 for a 6/128GB unit. The Redmi Note 10 started at $200 (6/64GB).

Pricing info: Redmi Note 11 Pricing info: Redmi Note 11S
Pricing info: Redmi Note 11 • Redmi Note 11S

As for the Redmi Note 11S, that camera upgrade isn’t cheap – it starts at $250 (6/64GB) and goes up to $300 (8/128GB), $20 more than the Note 10S on all storage options.

Flipkart Electronics Sale: Get iPhone 12 Mini for as low as Rs 25,149, here`s how - Zee News

New Delhi: The Electronics Offer, Flipkart's most recent sale, is now live on the e-commerce website. The Flipkart Electronics Sale includes a slew of deals and offers on smartphones such as Apple's iPhone, Motorola's Moto G51 5G, Realme GT Neo 2, and many others. The discount, which began on January 27, will continue until January 31. While there are a bevy of devices available at great prices during the sale, the bargain on the iPhone 12 Mini has everyone's attention.

During the Flipkart sale, the iPhone 12 Mini is priced at Rs 41,999 for the 64GB storage model. When compared to the smartphone's Rs 59,900 retail price, this is a much lower pricing. Above that, consumers can get a Rs 1,000 discount if they use a Citi Bank credit or debit card to buy the iPhone 12 Mini, bringing the price down to Rs 40,999. Above this, there is an exchange offer of up to Rs 15,850 on the iPhone 12 Mini, bringing the smartphone's price down to Rs 25,149, which almost sounds too good to be true. As a result, we attempted to purchase an iPhone 12 Mini to see how true this is.

So we attempted to trade in a 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro 8GB RAM model for an iPhone 12 Mini. The OnePlus 7 Pro costs Rs 14,900 on Flipkart, which brings the price of the iPhone 12 Mini down to Rs 27,099 - a Rs 32,801 savings off the smartphone's sticker price of Rs 59,900! We didn't have a Citi bank credit card, so we couldn't obtain the Rs 1,000 extra discount, but we were still able to get our hands on an iPhone Mini for Rs 27,099, which is ridiculously low when compared to the smartphone's quoted price of Rs 41,999.

The 128GB model of the iPhone 12 Mini can be obtained for Rs 40,099 by swapping an 8GB RAM variant of the 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro for the 128GB variant of the iPhone 12 Mini. This bargain will be available until January 31, so those interested in purchasing a new iPhone should take advantage of it before it expires.

After Instagram, Apple iPad app next? Here is what WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart said - HT Tech

Like Instagram for the iPad, a version of WhatsApp for Apple iPad has long eluded users despite being a heavily requested feature.

Whatsapp's chief has recently revealed that they are in favour of releasing an iPad app. "People have wanted an iPad app for a long time," Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp at its parent company Meta, told The Verge during an interview this week. "We'd love to do it," Cathcart added. Like Instagram for the iPad, a version of WhatsApp for Apple's tablet has long eluded users despite being a heavily requested feature.

While Cathcart wouldn't go so far as to commit to the release of an iPad version, his comments suggest it's possible that one will be built in the near future, especially now that WhatsApp has built the underlying technology needed for such a client to work.

"We did a lot of work on the technology for supporting multiple devices," Cathcart said, referencing the rollout of opt-in, multi-device support for WhatsApp last year.

"Our web and our desktop apps now have that. If I have multi-device on, I can turn my phone off or lose my network connection and still get messages on my desktop. That would be really important for a tablet app, to be able to use the app even if your phone isn't on. So the underlying technology is there," he shared.

Because of the way WhatsApp encrypts messages, it historically hasn't been able to sync chats across devices over the internet like most other messaging apps work. So if WhatsApp on your phone didn't have access to the internet, the desktop client didn't work.

The beta version of multi-device support lets you sync your WhatsApp account on up to four devices at a time, a process that involves mapping device identifiers to an account key on WhatsApp's servers in a way that's still encrypted.

Now that such syncing technology exists, there's a good chance that WhatsApp for iPad is finally on the horizon.

Facebook Messenger groups now have end-to-end encryption for calls, chats

(ANI): Facebook Messenger has added a string of new features recently. The features that users have received include end-to-end encryption, screenshot detection, message reactions, typing indicators, among several others.

Messenger added end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) chatting in 2016 when it was still called Facebook Messenger, and Meta was still Facebook.

Now many things have changed, but the optional feature is fully rolled out to everyone, with toggles to encrypt text messages as well as group chats and calls, reported The Verge.

Meta has discussed switching to E2EE as a default, but that may not happen until next year at the earliest, as some regulators claim this would harm public safety.

There are two ways Messenger users can opt in to the secure chats, either via vanish mode, by swiping up on an existing chat to enter one where messages automatically disappear when the window is closed or the original version that was introduced in 2016 as Secret Conversations. You can turn that on by toggling the lock icon when you start a new chat.

In addition to a full rollout of the feature, Messenger has some new features to enable as well. Now, in end-to-end encrypted chats, you can use GIFs, stickers, reactions, and long-press to reply or forward messages.

The encrypted chats also now support verified badges so that people can identify authentic accounts. You can also save media exchanged in the chats, and there's a Snapchat-style screenshot notification that will be rolling out over the next few weeks.

The screenshot detection feature and the message reactions feature is something WhatsApp users have been waiting to get for a long time. However, now that Facebook has made the features available to Messenger, they may soon be unveiled on WhatsApp as well.

All the new features will be rolled out to Messenger in the coming weeks.

An Indian rival to Android, iOS? Govt wants local firms to work on new mobile OS - HT Tech

The Indian government is working on policies to facilitate local development of an Indian operating system for smartphones.

The smartphone industry is dominated by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS to unprecedented extent. These two platforms have a total monopoly over the mobile devices category, and that is something the Indian government wants to change. Based on recent reports, it seems that the Indian government is considering coming up with policies to facilitate an environment that allows companies to work on an indigenous operating system for mobile devices. This platform will rival Android and iOS.

"There is no third one. Therefore, in a lot of ways there is tremendous interest in MeitY and in the Government of India to even create a new handset operating system. We are talking to people. We are looking at a policy for that," Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in an interview with PTI.

Indian OS to rival Android, iOS

The minister also said that the government is looking within the start-up and academic ecosystems to develop this indigenous operating system. "If there is some real capability then we will be very much interested in developing that area because that will create an alternative to iOS and Android which then an Indian brand can grow,” he added.

Currently, there are a couple of alternative operating systems to Android and iOS. Samsung tried to do it with its Tizen OS a couple of years ago. However, the platform did not gather momentum with smartphones and eventually Samsung restricted it to its smart TVs. Similarly, Reliance Jio relies on the KaiOS platform for its JioPhone feature phone.

Similarly, in the last decade, Microsoft came up with its Windows Phone platform that tried hard to take a pie from Android and iOS, However, Windows Phone (later Windows Mobile) died due to lack of developer support, despite it being a solid platform in terms of security and overall user experience.

As for this indigenous OS, it remains to be seen whether any Indian firm takes up the challenge and creates an ecosystem for developers to adopt and make apps for. Moreover, it also remains to be seen how many brands are willing to adopt the new OS on their smartphones.

JioPhone 5G leak suggests that India may finally get 5G this year - XDA Developers

After launching the JioPhone Next last year, Indian telecom giant Jio is now gearing up to launch an affordable 5G phone. The upcoming device, which will reportedly be called JioPhone 5G, is currently in the works and will hit the market sometime later this year. Given that Jio’s affordable phones sell like hotcakes, the rumored JioPhone 5G could singlehandedly drive 5G adoption in India.

Although Jio hasn’t revealed any official info about the JioPhone 5G yet, Android Central has managed to procure some details about its hardware specifications and software. According to the publication, the JioPhone 5G will pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 chipset, which should offer a significant performance improvement over the Snapdragon 215 found in the JioPhone Next. The device will also feature a larger 6.5-inch display, however, it will still be an HD+ (1600 x 720) panel.

Jio will reportedly pair the Snapdragon 480 in the JioPhone 5G with 4G RAM, 32GB of onboard storage, and a microSD card slot for further expansion. As far as 5G connectivity is concerned, the JioPhone 5G will offer support for N3, N5, N28, N40, and N78 bands. This leads us to believe that Jio’s 5G service, which will likely launch alongside the upcoming phone, should be available for all the other 5G devices that support these bands.

JioPhone Next

JioPhone Next

Android Central further reveals that the JioPhone 5G will pack a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support, a USB Type-C port, a 13MP primary camera, and an 8MP selfie shooter. Talking about the design, the publication notes that the JioPhone 5G will sport a much more modern design when compared to older devices from the company. It will feature thin bezels at the top and bottom, a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera, and rounded edges.

In terms of software, the JioPhone 5G will run Android 11 (Go edition) out of the box with a couple of tweaks, including an always-on Google Assistant, text-to-speech support, instant translate via Google Lens and Google Translate, and integration with various Indic languages. It will also come with Jio’s suite of apps pre-installed.

It’s worth mentioning that Jio hasn’t prototyped the device yet, so it may not feature these exact specifications by the time it hits the market. On top of that, Jio is reportedly planning to launch multiple SKUs under the JioPhone 5G moniker, which will likely offer different screen sizes and specs.

At the moment, we don’t have pricing and availability details for the device. We expect Jio to share more information about the JioPhone 5G in the coming months.

Apple iPhone users get this voice-based feature on WhatsApp before Android users - Times of India

After being in the beta stage for a while, WhatsApp is now rolling out new features for iPhone users. The latest version -- 22.2.75 -- of WhatsApp is now available to download for iPhone users and brings these new features to the Meta-owned instant messaging app.

New voice recording feature

WhatsApp users on iPhone can now pause and resume while recording voice messages. The feature was in beta mode for some time now but has now been rolled out publicly. Users will now see a pause button while recording voice notes. This means that users can listen to the voice note before they actually send it. They can delete the voice note or the option of resuming the recording is also there. Earlier, users had the option to stop rather than pause the voice recording.

You can now ensure only select users can send messages

This feature uses the Focus mode which is available with iOS 15. You can now ensure that select users can message you even if you have turned on the Focus mode. For the uninitiated, Focus mode is a feature that allows you to set your iPhone in DND mode, which means you can choose what notifications to receive. The feature was available to other apps like iMessage but is now available for WhatsApp as well. Do note that you will need your iPhone to be updated to iOS 15 or above to use this WhatsApp feature.

See the profile photos of users in notifications

Till now when you received a notification from WhatsApp, you could not see the photo but just the name of the person who sent the message. With the latest update, you can see the profile photo of the user as well in the notification summary. This feature is also available for those who have upgraded to iOS 15 or later version.

WhatsApp chat transfers from Android to iPhone coming soon - BGR

WhatsApp chat transfer is one of many annoying things you have to worry about when upgrading your smartphone. It’s not a real issue if you’re staying on the same operating system. You should have no problem backing up all of your data when upgrading from one iPhone to another. The same goes for Android. But if you routinely jump from Android to iPhone and vice versa, then things start to get more complicated. There are apps that move most of your data from Android to iPhone or the other way around. But WhatsApp chat transfers don’t work that way. Thankfully, WhatsApp has started addressing the matter. After recently adding support for iPhone to Android chat transfers, the company might soon let users move all of their conversations from Android to iPhone as well.

WhatsApp launched chat transfers from iPhone to Android last year. The feature was only available on Galaxy phones initially. Then Google’s Pixel handsets got support for WhatsApp chat transfers from iPhone.

Facebook supporting iPhone-to-Android upgrades seemed logical considering Facebook’s adversarial stance towards Apple. We had no idea at the time when support from Android to iPhone chat transfer would arrive. But it may arrive sooner than expected.

WABetaInfo posted information about new WhatsApp functionality inside Android last week. According to the site, WhatsApp is testing a new version of the app that lets users transfer chats from Android to iPhone. It’s unclear when the feature will roll out to all Android devices. It’s not even out for WhatsApp beta at this time.

How to transfer WhatsApp app chats from iPhone to Android

However, the WhatsApp blog obtained images that explain how the functionality might work. To transfer your chat history from Android to iPhone, you’ll have to give the phones permission to import chats.

Furthermore, the screens above say that WhatsApp will inform users to keep their phones unlocked and the app in the foreground as the data transfer is underway.

It’s unclear whether Android users will have to use Apple’s Move to iOS in combination with the WhatsApp chat transfer tool. The WABetaInfo blog says that Move to iOS might be required.

Move to iOS is unable to transfer WhatsApp history, as it is now. But it’s an app that will let you move plenty of personal data from Android to iPhone.

Not being able to transfer WhatsApp chat histories from one phone to the other with ease is a security feature. It ensures that other people won’t move your WhatsApp account to a different phone. In connection with end-to-end encryption, this helps safeguard your data.

Moreover, WhatsApp’s encryption might stand in the way of transferring chats with ease from Android to iPhone and vice-versa. That’s why you should consider only using the tools available from WhatsApp to move chat histories.

While you wait for WhatsApp to turn on the new functionality, you can check out how the iPhone-to-Android transfer feature works at this link.

Samsung Galaxy S22 European price leak suggests a base Ultra model with less RAM - The Verge

Potential European pricing information for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series has been released by reliable leaker Roland Quandt, as reported by Android Police. Samsung appears to have carried over its prices from the previous S21 lineup, with the only inconsistency being an equally-priced S22 Ultra model that supposedly comes with less RAM than its S21 predecessor.

Quandt claims the S22 will start at 849€ (~$963), the S22 Plus will set you back 1,049€ (~$1,190), and the base S22 Ultra will cost 1,249€ (~$1,417). It looks like all the base models in the series come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage — the standard S22 and S22 Plus have a higher-priced option for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the S22 Ultra offers two additional tiers that have 12GB of RAM with either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

These prices are identical to those of the S21 devices, but as pointed out by Android Police, Quandt’s leak indicates the base S22 Ultra may come with just 8GB of RAM instead of the 12GB that the base S21 Ultra has. Despite this, the S22 Ultra may still be the same price as the S21 Ultra — a 100€ premium will get you the extra 4GB you’re missing out on.

You can preorder a Galaxy S22 device before it’s even announced at Samsung’s February Unpacked event, which will give you a $50 credit towards your purchase. As Android Police points out, US pricing information for the devices leaked earlier this month, with the base S22 allegedly starting at $899, the S22 Plus costing $1,099, and the S22 Ultra priced at $1,299. If these prices are true, this would mean a $100 increase across the board.

There’s been plenty of leaked information about the S22 series floating around the internet, painting a near-complete picture of what the lineup could look like. Previous leaks show us an S22 Ultra that resembles the reportedly discontinued Note (complete with a stylus), while another gives us an early glimpse of what appears to be all three S22 dummy units in an unboxing video.
