MIUI 14 global rollout announced: List of smartphones, rollout time and more - Times of India

Alongside the Xiaomi 13 series announcement, Xiaomi has also announced its MIUI 14 global rollout details at MWC 2023 event. The company has also revealed the list of 18 Xiaomi and Redmi devices that are set to receive the latest MIUI 14 update. Although the company hasn’t revealed any specific timeline for the update rollout, it's expected to start by the end of Q1 this year.
MIUI 14 update rollout
Xiaomi’s MIUI rollout schedule includes devices from across the price bracket including flagship, mid-range and budget devices from the company. Xiaomi has also confirmed that more devices will be added to the list in the future.
When these devices will receive updates is still not clear as of now as the company hasn’t revealed the exact rollout timeline except the fact that the rollout will begin by the end of the first quarter.
We expect that the company will first rollout the update for its flagship devices and follow it with other smartphones.
It is also important to note that it is possible that MIUI 14 update may not include the latest Android version to the devices as Xiaomi has a history of pushing its latest custom user interface to their devices without the latest version of Android.

Stop WhatsApp messages from being deleted with this new feature - HT Tech

WhatsApp's disappearing message feature allows users to delete the chat history after a certain time frame. However, the online messaging app is now releasing a new feature for iOS and Android beta users that will prevent messages from being automatically deleted from the chat history when the disappearing messages feature is turned on. In order to use or test the feature you will have to install the latest versions of WhatsApp beta for iOS and Android.

Informing about the same, WABetaInfo tweeted, "WhatsApp is releasing a feature to keep messages from disappearing on iOS and Android beta! It is now possible to keep messages from disappearing in order to prevent them from being automatically deleted from the chat history!"

In another tweet, it also informed about the three rules to keep a message from disappearing. "3 rules to keep a message from disappearing:

- Everyone can keep a message so it won't disappear.

- Everyone can unkeep a message, and it won't be possible to keep it from disappearing anymore.

- Group admins can restrict who can use this feature within their group settings," the tweet read.

Giving further insights of the update, WABetaInfo said in a report that WhatsApp is now introducing the ability to keep messages from disappearing to some beta testers that install the latest beta version of the app from the Play Store and the TestFlight app. Sharing a screenshot, it explained, "you should be able to keep a message from disappearing in a conversation where disappearing messages are turned on. Thanks to this feature, it is now possible to prevent the expiration of certain disappearing messages by using the “Keep” action."

All those messages are marked by using a bookmark icon within the chat bubble and they are listed within the section “kept messages”, which is also available on iOS this week, the report added. Also, it is possible that not every WhatsApp beta user will be able to find this feature in the app. However, there is nothing to worry as this feature will be widely rolled out to more people over the coming days.

It can also be noted that there may be some limits in keeping old messages from disappearing and it may vary from 24 to 30 days. Also, people involved in the conversation will be having the control over this feature. "Anyone can unkeep messages in the chat by using the “unkeep” action (and it won't be possible to keep it from disappearing anymore), but group admins may be the only people to be able to keep a message from disappearing if they restricted who can edit their group info," WABetaInfo informed.

Mortal Kombat 12 slated to release in 2023 - Sportskeeda

Mortal Kombat 12, the twelfth installment in the arcade video game franchise, has finally been confirmed for a 2023 release by Warner Bros. at their earnings call event.

The last game in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, was released in 2019 to generally positive reviews from fans and critics. The expansion DLC for the eleventh installment, Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, was released on May 26, 2020. Both these releases were then followed by the Ultimate Edition of the game that was released on November 17, 2020, and included both the base Mortal Kombat 11 game and the Aftermath DLC.

Mortal Kombat 12 might feature Onaga as the main antagonist

Since there is not much news regarding Mortal Kombat 12, no sufficient information is available on which gaming consoles and platforms the twelfth game will hit. Gamers are also unsure whether it will be an exclusive next-gen game (for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC) or will it also include previous-gen consoles (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch). Additionally, an official trailer for the game is yet to be released.

However, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said at the earnings call event that both MK 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will have "ambitious launch projections."

Following the MK12 announcement, Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice video games, jokingly asked if fans had heard about Injustice 3, the highly anticipated third installment of DC and Netherrealm's Injustice video game franchise:

"So who has heard the news about INJUSTICE 3?"

So who has heard the news about INJUSTICE 3 ?

So who has heard the news about INJUSTICE 3 ?

In response, when a fan told Boon to stop joking, thinking Boon had meant Mortal Kombat 12, Boon replied to the fan by saying they did not get his joke:

"I don't think you're getting my joke."

Prior to the official announcement of Mortal Kombat 12 at the earnings call event, fans knew a twelfth installment was happening. This is because Mortal Kombat's co-creator Jonathan Anderson posted a picture teasing the game, which he has since deleted from his Twitter and social media.

However, some fans zoomed in on the photo and found a file name titled "MK12_Mast," leading to more speculations to rise among fans. The photo, when zoomed in, also contained a snippet of an email that read:

"Our fans eagerly scrape the internet."

Although plot details for Mortal Kombat 12 are currently unknown, fans can assume that the following playable roster will be present in the game:

  • Baraka
  • Cassie Cage
  • Cetrion
  • D'vorah
  • Erron Black
  • Frost
  • Geras
  • Jacqui Briggs
  • Jax Briggs
  • Jade
  • Johnny Cage
  • Kabal
  • Kano
  • Kitana
  • Kollector
  • Kotal Khan
  • Kung Lao
  • Liu Kang
  • Raiden
  • Noob Saibot
  • Scorpion
  • Shao Khan
  • Skarlet
  • Sonya Blade
  • Sub-Zero

The story of Mortal Kombat 12 may possibly follow the events of the last game, where Aftermath left off. In the last game, Liu Kang defeated the evil Kronika and gained power over time, thunder, and fire. He eventually gained Raiden's electric and lightning powers as well.

However, in Aftermath, Shang Tsung freed a being known as Onaga, the Dragon King. Thus, MK12 might possibly feature Onaga as the primary antagonist.

Apart from Mortal Kombat 12, this year will see the release of several other anticipated games, such as Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, Insomniac Games' Spider-Man 2, as well as other anticipated fighting games like Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6.

Google tells developers to implement alternative billing from April 26; developers cry foul - Economic Times

Google has told developers that they have till April 26 to comply with the new Google Play payments policy which will permit alternative billing. The company said this was being done in response to the recent regulatory developments in the country.

"This change means that developers can now offer an alternative billing system alongside Google Play's billing system to users in India making in-app purchases within Play-distributed apps on mobile phones and tablets," the search giant said in an email reviewed by ET.

Developers, however, said this was a direct violation of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) guidelines and alleged that Google was 'finding loopholes' in the CCI's verdict and 'going the South Korea way' wherein they introduced user choice billing after coming under fire from regulatory authorities in South Korea.

The CCI in its two rulings — one on October 20 and the second on October 25 — had directed the American company to make close to 20 changes in the operation of its services in India which included providing alternative payment options to developers.

In its verdict, the CCI said, "Google shall allow, and not restrict app developers from using any third-party billing/ payment processing services, either for in-app purchases or for purchasing apps. Google shall also not discriminate or otherwise take any adverse measures against such apps using third party billing/ payment processing services, in any manner."

In January, Google announced around five changes to the way it operates Android and Google Play billing in India. One among these changes was to expand user choice billing to all developers.

Discover the stories of your interest

Google was forced to extend the timeline for apps on alternative payment systems to comply with its play billing system multiple times and also had to defer the enforcement of 30% commission on in-app purchases of digital goods from its Play Store in India owing to mounting protests by Indian developers."Google is 'finding loopholes' in the CCI verdict," Snehil Khanor, co-founder & CEO of TrulyMadly.com told ET. "The CCI clearly mandated that they should permit third party payments but in doing this Google is ensuring that the payments are routed through them. It is exactly what they did in South Korea by launching user choice billing after the South Korean authorities mandated that they should allow users multiple payment options."

A Google spokesperson also told ET earlier that the company has submitted its compliance plan to the CCI and continues to follow the legal process in India.

"We are making some changes as required by the CCI’s directives. Implementation of these changes across the ecosystem will be a complex process and will require significant work at our end and, in many cases, significant efforts from partners, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers," Google had said in its blog post at the time.

Policy think tank Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF) on Thursday also alleged that Google was "blatantly disobeying" the CCI orders by charging app developers an 'exorbitant' 11-26% commission. ADIF said that if a user pays through an alternate billing system, the Google Play service fee will be reduced by 4%.

"Thus, while an alternative billing system will be permitted by Google, it will continue charging service fees from the developers which will be 4% less than the normal service which they would charge if the user had availed of the GPBS option i.e., the commission rate under user choice would be 11% or 26%, as the case may be. Therefore, despite not using any service from Google, app developers will be forced to pay commissions to Google," ADIF said in a statement on Thursday.

"When a consumer chooses to use an alternative billing system, the standard service fee the developer pays will be reduced by 4%," a Google spokesperson told ET on Thursday.

The spokesperson went on to add that Google Play’s service fee has never been simply a fee for payment processing.

"It reflects the value provided by Android and Google Play, and all of the developer services we offer, including app distribution and discovery, the commerce platform, developer tools, analytics, training, and more," the spokesperson said.

In a blog post in 2021, Google's Senior Director of Public Policy Wilson White, said developers in South Korea would be able to add an alternative in-app billing system, alongside Google Play’s billing system, for their mobile and tablet users in the country.

"At checkout, users will be able to choose which billing system to use," he explained. "We respect the decision of the National Assembly, and we are sharing some changes to respond to this new law, including giving developers that sell in-app digital goods and services the option to add an alternative in-app billing system alongside Google Play’s billing system for their users in South Korea."

White went on to add in his post that when a user selects alternative billing in South Korea, Google would reduce the developer’s service fee by 4%. "For example, for the vast majority of developers who pay 15% for transactions through Google Play's billing system, their service fee for transactions through the alternate billing system would be 11%," he said.

Bing, Bard, ChatGPT, and all the news on AI chatbots - The Verge

Big players including Microsoft, with its new Bing (or is it Sydney?), Google, with Bard, and OpenAI, with ChatGPT are making AI chatbot technology previously restricted to test labs more accessible to the general public.

How do these Large Language Model (LLM) programs work? OpenAI’s GPT-3 told us that AI uses “a series of autocomplete-like programs to learn language” and that these programs analyze “the statistical properties of the language” to “make educated guesses based on the words you’ve typed previously.”

Or, in the words of James Vincent, a human person, “These AI tools are vast autocomplete systems, trained to predict which word follows the next in any given sentence. As such, they have no hard-coded database of ‘facts’ to draw on — just the ability to write plausible-sounding statements. This means they have a tendency to present false information as truth since whether a given sentence sounds plausible does not guarantee its factuality.”

But there are so many more pieces to the AI landscape that are coming into play — and there are going to be problems — but you can be sure to see it all unfold here on The Verge.

Can you think like an AI?

The game is to guess the secret word. The hitch is that the AI is classifying what words are alike. Yesterday’s word was “grasshopper,” and the AI thought “ant” was closer than “cricket.” Maybe that’s true if you’re analyzing texts to predict the next word — after all, there’s a fable about an ant and a grasshopper — but “cricket” and “grasshopper” are synonyms!

  • If you need to use AI to respond to a tragedy, maybe it’s better to say nothing at all.

The Vanderbilt Hustler reports the school’s Peabody Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is apologizing after sending a message regarding the shooting at Michigan State University that was “paraphrased” from OpenAI’s ChatGPT model (via Gizmodo).

The generic-sounding email lacks any kind of personal touch, and responses to it reflect that, as noted by this quote from Vanderbilt student Laith Kayat:

Deans, provosts, and the chancellor: Do more. Do anything. And lead us into a better future with genuine, human empathy, not a robot

In the wake of the Michigan shootings, let us come together as a community to reaffirm our commitment to caring for one another and promoting a culture of inclusivity on our campus. By doing so, we can honor the victims of this tragedy and work towards a safer, more compassionate future for all. (Paraphrase from OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI language model, personal communication, February 15, 2023).

New S1deload Stealer malware hijacks Youtube, Facebook accounts - BleepingComputer

Data theft

An ongoing malware campaign targets YouTube and Facebook users, infecting their computers with a new information stealer that will hijack their social media accounts and use their devices to mine for cryptocurrency.

Security researchers with Bitdefender's Advanced Threat Control (ATC) team discovered the new malware and dubbed it S1deload Stealer due to its extensive use of DLL sideloading for evading detection.

"Between July and December 2022, Bitdefender products detected more than 600 unique users infected with this malware," Bitdefender researcher DĂĄvid Ács said.

Victims are tricked into infecting themselves using social engineering and comments on FaceBook pages that push archives with adult themes (e.g., AlbumGirlSexy.zip, HDSexyGirl.zip, SexyGirlAlbum.zip, and more).

If the user downloads one of the linked archives, they will instead get an executable signed with a valid Western Digital digital signature and a malicious DLL (WDSync.dll) containing the final payload.

S1deload Stealer lure
S1deload Stealer lure archive contents (Bitdefender)

Once installed on victims' devices, S1deload Stealer can be instructed by its operators to perform one of several tasks after connecting to the command-and-control (C2) server.

As Bitdefender discovered, it can download and run additional components, including a headless Chrome web browser that runs in the background and emulates human behavior to artificially boost view counts on YouTube videos and Facebook posts.

On other systems, it can also deploy a stealer that decrypts and exfiltrates saved credentials and cookies from the victim's browser and the Login Data SQLite database or a cryptojacker that will mine BEAM cryptocurrency.

If it manages to steal a Facebook account, the malware will also attempt to estimate its actual value by leveraging the Facebook Graph API to find out if the victim is the admin of a Facebook page or group, if it pays for ads, or is linked to a business manager account.

"The stealer component we observed in the wild steals the saved credentials from the victim's browser, exfiltrating them to the malware author's server," Ács added.

"The malware author uses the newly obtained credentials to spam on social media and infect more machines, creating a feedback loop."

S1deload Stealer's Facebook propagation
S1deload Stealer's Facebook propagation (Bitdefender)

To avoid getting infected and having your social media accounts hijacked, you should never run executables from unknown sources and always keep your anti-malware software up to date.

Indicators of compromise (IOCs) and YARA rules linked to this malware campaign are available at the end of Bitdefender's whitepaper (PDF).

Threat intelligence company SEKOIA also spotted a new information stealer strain known as Stealc and advertised on the dark web and hacking forums as featuring an easy-to-use administration panel and extensive data-stealing capabilities.

Unlike S1deload Stealer, the Stealc malware is distributed via fake cracked software, a highly popular tactic also used to push other info stealers like Vidar, Redline, Raccoon, and Mars.

Microsoft Expands AI Chat Elements to Bing Mobile, Edge and Skype - Social Media Today

Despite rising concerns around misinformation, and various confusing exchanges with the AI system, Microsoft is pushing ahead with its ChatGPT integration, with the launch of new versions of Bing, Edge and Skype which all include elements of ChatGPT, expanding access to the new generative AI process.

As per Microsoft:

“Two weeks ago, we introduced the world to the all new AI-powered Bing and Microsoft Edge - your copilot for the web. Since then, based on strong and positive product feedback and engagement, we’ve welcomed more than one million people in 169 countries off the waitlist into the preview.  We continue to expand the preview to more people every day. Our preview community is actively using the breadth of new features across Search, Answers, Chat and Creation with total engagement up significantly. Feedback on the new capabilities is positive, with 71% of testers giving the new Bing a “thumbs up” on the new search and answers capabilities.”

With Bing getting the most attention it’s gotten in years, Microsoft is jumping on the opportunity, with the launch of new Bing and Edge mobile apps, including AI intregration.

Bing mobile preview

Available on iOS and Android today, the Bing mobile app offers a fresh look and experience. Tapping the Bing icon at the bottom will invoke a chat session, where you can engage in all the same ways you can from the desktop. Ask simple or complex questions and receive answers and citations. Choose how you want your answers displayed – bullet points, text or simplified responses. Explore the Bing chat experience to refine your query or compose an email, poem or list.

Microsoft is also adding AI-powered Bing for Skype, providing another way to access its new AI features, as it looks to quickly iterate on the option.

Is that a good thing?

Many experts have voiced concerns with the initial roll out of ChatGPT, and the expanded use of AI tools like this, at least until we fully understand the implications of such. Some of those concerns feel like doomsday scenarios, where AI will become sentient and take over humanity, but in most cases, the issues lie in the fact that we don’t know what will happen once these tools are fully available, and how that will impact broader information flow and understanding.

If AI tools are spreading misinformation, and that misinformation is then repeated, what if the AI models are then re-learning based on flawed examples, exacerbating the problem?

There are also concerns related to the types of information that these tools can present, like conspiracy theories displayed as fact. There are various edges that the system can fall off, and it seems, at this stage, that we don’t really understand what the impacts might be on a broad scale.

But as Microsoft notes, interest is high, and now is the time to capitalize, and pressure Google on the search front.

Will that lead to a better online experience? Maybe, probably – we really don’t know, and we won’t know for some time yet.

Which seems risky, but evidently, it’s happening, and you’ll now have more ways to access and utilize these new tools within your day-to-day process.

It’s a key area worth watching, especially for those looking to understand key usage trends, and their impacts on attention.

Those who are currently able to access the Bing preview will be able to use these new tools from today. You can sign up for the Bing preview here.

How to find Jobberknolls and obtain Jobberknoll Feathers in Hogwarts Legacy - Sportskeeda

Hogwarts Legacy is a magical adventure across a world set in the Harry Potter series of novels and media. It features fantastic otherworldly creatures that players can capture and add to their collection in the Vivarium in the Room of Requirement.

One such exotic species of magical beasts include the Jobberknolls, which will be the focus of this particular article.

Note: Spoilers for certain story elements of Hogwarts Legacy will follow. Viewer discretion is advised.

The Jobberknoll den locations in the in-game map (Image via YouTube/Gaming Tornedo)

There are six Jobberknoll dens in the in-game world of Hogwarts Legacy, as seen by animal paw marks on the world map. Unfortunately, the animal paw marker can refer to any animal, making the process rather cumbersome.

For ease of reference, players can look at these locations, which contain an abundance of these beasts:

  • The first location is southwest of the San Bakar Tower Floo station. Players can head here to find a Jobberknoll den.
  • For the next location, head south from the Marunweem and exit the town to find the den.
  • Another Jobberknoll den is found in Bainburgh, near Manor Cape. Make your way eastward to find the den.
  • The fourth den is located west of Irondale and is relatively easy to come across.
  • Yet another den can be found within Manor Cape as well. Make your way to the road from the Floo Station and head south to find it.
  • The sixth and final Jobberknoll Den is found near Hogwarts Valley.

How can players acquire Jobberknoll Feathers?

To acquire these Feathers, players must first rescue and capture the beasts, which can be accomplished in the following steps:

  • As a prerequisite, you must have completed the main story quest, “The Elf, the Nab-sack, and the Loom,” before capturing the beasts.
  • Make your way to the locations that spawn the Jobberknolls.
  • Sneak across to the beast, making sure not to alert it. The Disillusionment charm is heavily recommended.
  • Bring out the Nab-sack and follow the two button prompts to capture it.
  • You can always use the Arresto Momentum or Levioso spells to buy yourself some time.
  • A light grey, white dotted special Shiny Jobberknoll can also be found.
  • Next, head to the Vivarium in the Room of Requirement.
  • After releasing the Jobberknolls, make sure to brush and feed them.
  • Doing so will reward the player with five Jobberknoll Feathers they can collect and use.

Make sure to clear your inventory before collecting Jobberknolls. Players can also choose to release them into the wild if they so wish or sell them for 120 Galleons each at the Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade.

Google warns iPhone, Android users about THIS Photo app feature - HT Tech

Google is warning both iPhone and Android phone users about the "estimated photo locations" feature, which stores sensitive data with the photos you have taken. How does Google detect locations in clicked photos? Google has explained that your photo may save the location where photo was taken. Your device's camera saves your location with the photo. Google Photos estimates your location from information such as landmarks detected in your photo and locations in your other photos.

Now a Google alert is informing users that photo locations come from multiple locations including Google Photos. However, it must be noted that Google stopped using photo locations to know where you clicked a particular photo or recorded a video. However, it still works while using other methods such as 'estimate missing locations'.

The-Sun.com reports that while opening the Google Photos app, you will be prompted to choose whether to keep or remove any existing estimated locations. If you opt to delete them, a warning message will appear, notifying you that: "Deleting estimated photo locations based on Location History may lead to the permanent loss of those estimated locations.”

It completely depends on you to keep or delete the existing locations from your device from Google Photos depending on what you're comfortable with. Currently, Google is giving you a choice. If you do not select the option to retain your estimated locations before May 1st, 2023, Google will automatically delete them. If you don't want your photo locations saved, pick delete.

If you want to remove existing locations from your Google Photos on iPhones and Android devices, then you can do it this way:

How to remove a location from your Google Photos

  • On your Android phone, tablet or iPhone, open Google Photos.
  • Open the photo or video.
  • Tap More denoted with three horizontal dots and then tap Edit.
  • Now add or select a location from your recent locations and tap Remove location.
  • You can also edit the location of multiple photos. Simply select the photos whose location you want to edit in Google Photos and tap More to select 'Edit Location.' Here, you will be able to add or select a location for the image.
