WWDC 2023: Indian among first-time winners of Apple's Swift Student Challenge - Hindustan Times

By, New Delhi
May 31, 2023 01:40 PM IST

The total number of winners, however, is 375, an increase from 350 from the previous editions of the competition.

Ahead of the 2023 edition of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple has announced the winners of the Swift Student Challenge, which precedes each edition of the WWDC.

Among the total 375 winners of Swift Student Challenge 2023, there are some first-time champions as well, including an Indian: Indore resident Asmi Jain.

Who is Asmi Jain?

Jain, a student of Medi-Caps University in her hometown – the country's cleanest city – designed an app playground to track a user's eye movements, as they try to follow a ball moving around the screen. She entered the competition after a friend's uncle, after undergoing a brain surgery, was left with eye misalignment and facial paralysis.

The developer, however, hopes her creation can be used for various eye conditions and injuries. “My next goal is to get feedback and make sure it’s effective and user-friendly, and then release it on the App Store. Ultimately, I want to expand it so that it helps strengthen all of the muscles in the face,” she said.

For Jain, the desire to use coding to solve problems in the healthcare sector stems from the many years she spent volunteering to help people around her.

Coding, she said, ‘lets me create things that help my friends and community, and gives me a sense of independence that is very empowering.’

Apple Swift Student Challenge

Under this, the tech giant issues a challenge to students across the globe; it asks them to create an original app playground using the Swift coding language. Also, to recognise more students for their artistry and ingenuity, the Tim Cook-helmed company increased the number of winners to 375, from 350 in the previous editions.

“We are amazed by the talent we see from the young developers who enter the challenge,” said Susan Prescott, Apple's vice-president of Worldwide Developers Relations.

Prescot added: “This year’s submissions demonstrated not only the next generation’s commitment to building tools that will improve our lives, but also a willingness to embrace new technologies and tools, and deploy them in original and creative ways.”

These champions will now get to be in attendance for WWDC, both virtually and in-person. The 5-day event will kick off on June 5.

Twitter is testing Community Notes for images, videos: How it will help users - Times of India

Twitter is one of the social media platforms that has witnessed an increase in AI-generated images and videos. These media often become sources of misinformation. For example, an AI generated video of an explosion near the Pentagon quickly became a hot topic worldwide. To curb such instances, the microblogging platform is now expanding the Community Notes feature photos and videos. The feature is aimed at making it easier for people to identify potentially misleading media.
"From AI-generated images to manipulated videos, it’s common to come across misleading media. Today we’re piloting a feature that puts a superpower into contributors’ hands: Notes on Media Notes attached to an image will automatically appear on recent & future matching images," the company said in a tweet.
What is Community Notes
Formerly known as Birdwatch, Community Notes started as a pilot project aimed at curtailing misinformation and "create a better-informed world." In this programme, a select few participants can add, in a collaborative manner, notes to tweets bringing helpful context.
"If you're a contributor with a Writing Impact of 10 or above, you’ll see a new option on some Tweets to mark your notes as 'About the image'. This option can be selected when you believe the media is potentially misleading in itself, regardless of which Tweet it is featured in," Twitter said.
With the latest announcement, the feature will allow contributors who have high enough ratings to apply notes to images shared within tweets, labelling them so that people know that a particular image or video has been created using generative AI or is manipulated.
"Raters and readers will see notes that authors marked as 'about the image' slightly differently, so it’s clear to everyone that they should be interpreted as about the media, not the specific Tweet. Ratings can help identify cases where a note may not apply to a specific Tweet," the company added.
Right now, Community Notes for media supports Tweets with a single image. Twitter said that it is working to expand it to videos and tweets with multiple images/ videos.

Work in progress
The company also highlighted that this feature could also tackle the viral spread of AI-generated, misleading images. Twitter noted that it wants the notes to automatically appear on “recent and future” copies of the same image even if they are shared by separate users on the platform. Twitter is still working in that direction.
“It’s currently intended to err on the side of precision when matching images, which means it likely won’t match every image that looks like a match to you. We will work to tune this to expand coverage while avoiding erroneous matches,” Twitter said.

Computex 2023: news, hands-on, and more - The Verge

After three years, Computex is finally back — in person, in all its glory. The biggest companies in the laptop and PC space, from Taiwan and elsewhere, will be gathered in Taipei this week to showcase products they’ll be releasing this summer and throughout the rest of 2023. We expect to see a whole bunch of refreshes to popular laptop lines, updated desktop components, and maybe even (dare we say it?) a CPU or two. Plus, software services and artificial intelligence were a major focus of CES earlier this year, and we certainly expect that trend to continue.

If you’re interested in following the latest laptop news but can’t make it out to Taiwan yourself, never fear.

We’ll be on the ground in Taipei all week, catching keynotes, interviewing the big players, and getting our hands on some of the most exciting gadgets that you’ll see in 2023. Come along for the ride.

  • A Mercedes computer?

If you’ve ever wished you could own a luxury car without paying luxury car money, you might consider, instead, an RGB gaming laptop. MSI has partnered with Mercedes to create the new Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, and it looks like about what you’d get if you put a racecar into laptop form.

The new SMAM (that’s not its name, but it’s what I’m going to be calling it) features the Mercedes logo on the lid, an AMG rhombus pattern on the spacebar, and a power button that looks like an engine ignition. Oh, and it’s full of RGB. Because, of course. Obviously.

MSI — a brand traditionally known for gaming hardware — has announced a bunch of laptops at Computex 2023, and there’s an interesting lack of gamery among them. Instead, the company appears to be focusing hard on the premium lifestyle space with its mid-2023 offerings.

Notable among these releases is the new Commercial 14 series, a line of business laptops intended to compete with high-end enterprise PCs — the likes of the ThinkPad. I conclude this from the fact that MSI’s press release highlights its “tailor-made solutions to enterprises through a series of optional security measures, NFC (near-field communication) and built-in Smart Card Reader.” If that’s not a word-for-word ThinkPad pitch, I don’t know what is.

  • Asus has a proprietary new GPU power connector.

As the Computex 2023 show gets rolling, WCCF Tech highlights this “Megalodon” Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU and motherboard combo. It ditches the troublesome power cables found on today’s massive GPUs for a new slot that sits next to the standard PCIe Gen 4.0 x16 connection and delivers up to 600W of power, similar to the MPX Module in Apple’s Mac Pro.

Asus plans to release this tech globally later this year, and said devices with it will cost slightly more than the regular SKUs.

  • This is what a 144TB Nvidia GPU looks like.

Nvidia just announced its DGX GH200 at Computex. It’s got 256 of its new “Grace Hopper superchips” for an exaflop of AI performance — and contains 150 miles of optical fiber and over 2,000 fans. Google, Meta and Microsoft will be “evaluating” it, though not necessarily purchasing kits: they tend to build their own compute clouds, even if they contain loads of Nvidia GPUs.

Nvidia says it’s 2.2x faster than a last-gen DGX H100 cluster at GPT3 training, as one example.

  • Arm Cortex Immortalis 2023.

Say it with me: Arm doesn’t sell chips. But it does design CPU and GPU cores its licensees can optionally use. What’s new?

Cortex-X4 (big CPU): 15% more perf, 40% less power

    Cortex-A720 and A520: 20% and 22% more efficient, respectively

Immortalis-G720 (the GPU): 15% more perf, 40% lighter on memory bandwidth

Last time, they only came together in the MediaTek Dimensity 9200, which arrived in the Vivo X90, X90 Pro and Oppo Find X6.

  • At Computex 2023 in Taipei, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang just gave the world a glimpse of what it might be like when gaming and AI collide — with a graphically breathtaking rendering of a cyberpunk ramen shop where you can actually talk to the proprietor.

Seriously, instead of clicking on dialogue options, it imagines you could hold down a button, just say something with your own voice, and get an answer from a video game character. Nvidia’s calling it a “peek at the future of games.”

Computex, one of the biggest trade shows of the year for the laptop and PC space, begins in a couple of days. A number of companies will have big announcements, but the most anticipated event of the week is Nvidia’s keynote, which will open the show on Monday morning.

The keynote speaker will be Nvidia’s founder and CEO Jensen Huang, who — in case you missed it — added $7 billion to his net worth a few days ago following the company’s massive Q1 earnings report.

  • Computex is almost here.

The Taipei International Information Technology Show opens in just five days, and we’ve already got announcements rolling in. Acer’s getting the ball rolling this morning with the launch of a refreshed Swift Edge 16 (it’s high-end, AMD-powered, ultralight, OLED workstation) and Predator Triton 16 (a QHD AAA gaming rig).

Expanded tools for SpatialLabs, its glasses-free 3D technology, are also in the works. Whether these will be enough to make people actually want glasses-free 3D laptops, of course, remains to be seen.

We’ll be on the ground in Taipei next week bringing you news from all the biggest Taiwanese laptop companies (and maybe some others too).

WhatsApp testing ‘Status Archive’ feature for business accounts - The Indian Express

WhatsApp is one of the few instant messaging apps that frequently receives new features. After rolling out the ability to edit sent messages and lock chats, a recent report by WABetaInfo suggests that the developers are now working on adding the ability to archive the status for WhatsApp business users.

Available to select beta users, with WhatsApp Business Android version 2.23.11.18, users archive their status updates 24 hours after it is posted. Once available, users will get a banner in the app’s ‘Status’ tab suggesting that updates will be kept on their devices for up to 30 days after it is shared and that only the user will be able to see the archived updates.

This is a really useful feature for business owners since they will be able to share the status from their archives with customers. Users will also be able to create advertisements for Facebook and Instagram in the meantime. Currently, the ability to add status updates to the archive is limited to business users, but WhatsApp might roll out the feature to normal users in the future.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp introduced a built-in sticker creator for iOS and introduced support for screen sharing on Android and more.

Microsoft Launches 'Jugalbandi', An AI-Based Multilingual Chatbot For Rural India - NDTV

Microsoft Launches 'Jugalbandi', An AI-Based Multilingual Chatbot For Rural India

The chatbot is designed for farmers and other users living in rural India.

Microsoft has unveiled a new generative AI-driven chatbot called 'Jugalbandi', designed for farmers and other users living in rural India. The chatbot is being developed in collaboration with Microsoft Research and the government-backed AI4Bharat - an open-source language AI centre based at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras - and OpenNyAI.

According to a press release, the chatbot will operate over the WhatsApp messaging service and it aims to make information on government schemes accessible in multiple languages.

Microsoft has said that the bot could help bridge the language barrier in India where English is spoken by just 11 percent of the 1.4 billion population. It also noted that only 57 percent of Indians speak Hindi, leaving "vast numbers of the population unable to access government programs because of language barriers".

Therefore, "Jugalbandi offers all Indians easy access to information in local language through a mobile phone, instead of having to head to the local community service center and stand in line just to get basic information," the company stated.

Further, the firm explained that the chatbot understands a user's exact problem in their language and then tries to deliver the right information reliably and cheaply, even if that exists in some other language in a database somewhere.

Also Read | After Brazil Outcry, Google Pulls 'Slavery Simulator' Game From App Store

To use the chatbot, the process remains the same as any other chatbot on WhatsApp, that is, by sending "hi" to a specific number. "A villager sends a text or audio message to a WhatsApp number, which initiates the Jugalbandi bot. That is transcribed to text using the AI4Bharat speech recognition model. That, in turn, is translated to English by the Bhashini translation model trained by AI4Bharat," Microsoft explained in its blog.

"Based on the prompt, Azure OpenAI Service's model retrieves information on the relevant government scheme. The answer is translated to Hindi. That is then synthesized with the AI4Bharat text-to-speech model and sent back to WhatsApp - and the villager's ear," the company added.

So far, Jugalbandi covers 10 of India's 22 official languages and 171 of a total of approximately 20,000 government programmes. However, the company has noted that the application still has "rough edges" but also stated that AI4Bharat is trying to resolve issues by seeking feedback from organisations such as Gram Vaani, a Delhi-based social enterprise that closely works with farmers.

Once perfected, users will be able to understand and enrol for basic government schemes hassle-free, Microsoft said.

Tim Cook's 5 key tips for success in a changing world - HT Tech

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple since 2011, has successfully carried forward co-founder Steve Jobs' legacy as a leader. Apple, undoubtedly the largest and most influential company in the world, holds a special place in the hearts of those who aspire to push the boundaries of technology and innovation. Cook not only stepped into the role of CEO but also shouldered the weight of being an innovator.

Surpassing everyone's expectations, Cook has proven himself to be the ideal leader for Apple. During his tenure, he has introduced numerous groundbreaking innovations, including the game-changing Apple Watch. This device not only tells time but also monitors heart rate, provides call and message notifications, offers guidance, and much more. Cook's career offers valuable lessons for aspiring leaders on achieving and sustaining success. Here are four of Cook's key lessons that can help you achieve success like him.

1. Embrace visionary thinking

When Cook took over Apple from Jobs, he knew the company needed to continue growing to remain relevant. He embraced change and implemented adjustments to both the company and its products. For example, he ventured into streaming platforms and distributed the 2022 Oscar-nominated film Causeway, starring Jennifer Lawrence. The crucial takeaway is to have your own goals, ideas, and projects, regardless of your profession—be it art, engineering, entrepreneurship, or others. Having clarity about your objectives will keep you focused and on the right path.

2. Progress while honouring the past

Understanding current needs and adapting to them is crucial. However, it's equally important to acknowledge that the world keeps evolving, and what works today may not work tomorrow. Cook focuses on meeting the needs of today's consumers while continuously searching for new features and functions for Apple products. This approach ensures the company's ongoing growth. Although Apple was founded in 1976, it has never ceased to evolve. The lesson here is to appreciate our past while taking action in the present.

3. Dare to stand out

Cook and Apple's philosophy is simple: to achieve success, you must go beyond what everyone else is doing. Following the crowd leads to a sea of interchangeable alternatives. To truly stand out, you must forge your own path. While you can seek advice or leverage opportunities opened by others, success comes from infusing your work with your own identity. Stay authentic and true to your vision to stay ahead of the competition.

4. Embrace the power of the Awkward Pause

Cook firmly believes in taking time to thoroughly consider things before responding, even if it results in awkward silence. He follows the "Rule of Awkward Silence," which allows for better decision-making, reduced mistakes, and effective communication. This rule advises taking a few minutes to ponder before answering questions, ensuring that your response is the best answer or solution ready to be shared. Implementing this rule may be challenging, but great things take time.

5. Embrace the art of listening

Being able to speak doesn't automatically make someone a good listener. In contrast to Steve Jobs, Tim Cook presents a more reserved and introspective nature. He actively engages in conversations by attentively listening to others and ensuring his focus remains unwavering, avoiding distractions or letting his thoughts drift away.

However, these tips don't mean sacrificing human connection. Contrary to popular belief, Cook is not glued to his smartphone or laptop all day. In fact, he emphasises the importance of disconnecting from devices and meeting people. Jobs had a similar approach, which helped him build a strong foundation with the people at Apple. While technology offers many benefits, it shouldn't overshadow our real-world connections.
