Google Bans Over 3,500 Loan Apps In 2022 Over Policy Violation: Report - Jagran English

GOOGLE, a popular California-based technology company, has reportedly announced that it has taken action against approximately 3,500 loan apps for violating Play Store policies. Previously, it was speculated that the tech giant would restrict personal loan providers' access to the user's sensitive information, including media files.

The company also revealed that it has already stopped 1.43 million policies-violating apps from being published and that Google Play has banned 173,000 bad accounts, preventing over USD 2 billion in fraudulent and abusive transactions in 2022.

"In India, we reviewed and took necessary enforcement action, including app removal, on more than 3,500 personal loan apps in 2022 for violations of the Play policy requirements. We continue to raise the bar in this area by regularly updating our policies and review processes," Google wrote in a blog post.

It's interesting to note that the company updated the Play Store developer guidelines in 2021, specifically for financial service applications that now include standards for personal loan apps in India. By September 2021, shortly after the revision, the policy went into effect. It included the submission of paperwork, checking to see if they had an RBI loan licence, and submitting the licence. Additionally, through the declaration, the names of the developers and accounts must be matched with the related registered business.

Meanwhile, the company has removed over 36 applications from the Android Google Play Store after McAfee discovered them. However, some of the harmful applications were updated, and others were declared to be capable of carrying out actions that do not even require the device owner's input.

Tokyo, Apr 27: A Japanese company’s spacecraft apparently crashed while attempting to land on the moon Wednesday, losing contact moments before touchdown and sending flight controllers scrambling to figure out what happened.
More than six hours after communication ceased, the Tokyo company ispace finally confirmed what everyone had suspected, saying there was “a high probability” that the lander had slammed into the moon.
It was a disappointing setback for ispace, which after a 4 1/2-month mission had been on the verge of doing what only three countries have done: successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.
Takeshi Hakamada, founder and CEO of ispace, held out hope even after contact was lost as the lander descended the final 33 feet (10 meters), travelling around 16 mph (25 kph.)
Flight controllers peered at their screens in Tokyo as minutes went by with only silence from the moon.
A grim-faced team surrounded Hakamada as he announced, “We have to assume that we could not complete the landing on the lunar surface.”
Official word finally came in a statement: “It has been determined that there is a high probability that the lander eventually made a hard landing on the moon’s surface.”
If all had gone well, ispace would have been the first private business to pull off a lunar landing.
Hakamada vowed to try again, saying a second moonshot is already in the works for next year.
Only three governments have successfully touched down on the moon: Russia, the United States and China.
An Israeli nonprofit tried to land on the moon in 2019, but its spacecraft was destroyed on impact.
“If space is hard, landing is harder,” tweeted Laurie Leshin, director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “I know from personal experience how awful this feels.”
Leshin worked on NASA’s Mars Polar lander that crashed on the red planet in 1999.
The 7-foot (2.3-meter) Japanese lander carried a mini lunar rover for the United Arab Emirates and a toylike robot from Japan designed to roll around in the moon dust. There were also items from private customers on board.
Named Hakuto, Japanese for white rabbit, the spacecraft had targeted Atlas crater in the northeastern section of the moon’s near side, more than 50 miles (87 kilometers) across and just over 1 mile (2 kilometers) deep.
It took a long, roundabout route to the moon following its December liftoff, beaming back photos of Earth along the way. The lander entered lunar orbit on March 21.
Founded in 2010, ispace hopes to start turning a profit as a one-way taxi service to the moon for other businesses and organizations. The company has already raised $300 million to cover the first three missions, according to Hakamada.
“We will keep going, never quit lunar quest,” he said.
For this test flight, the two main experiments were government-sponsored: the UAE’s 22-pound (10-kilogram) rover Rashid, named after Dubai’s royal family, and the Japanese Space Agency’s orange-sized sphere designed to transform into a wheeled robot on the moon.
With a science satellite already around Mars and an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, the UAE was seeking to extend its presence to the moon.
The moon is suddenly hot again, with numerous countries and private companies clamouring to get on the lunar bandwagon.
China has successfully landed three spacecraft on the moon since 2013, and U.S., China, India and South Korea have satellites currently circling the moon.
NASA’s first test flight in its new moonshot programme, Artemis, made it to the moon and back late last year, paving the way for four astronauts to follow by the end of next year and two others to actually land on the moon a year after that.
Pittsburgh’s Astrobotic Technology and Houston’s Intuitive Machines have lunar landers waiting in the wings, poised to launch later this year at NASA’s behest.
Hakuto and the Israeli spacecraft named Beresheet were finalists in the Google Lunar X Prize competition requiring a successful landing on the moon by 2018.

WhatsApp is working on a feature called "channels" that will enable people to broadcast a message for several users. The one-to-many tool for broadcasting information is being developed for iPhones.
What is WhatsApp Channels
A WhatsApp channel is essentially a private tool in which phone numbers and user information are always kept private, WABetaInfo said. The Meta-owned instant messaging app plans to rename the Status tab "Updates" in order to include channels within this section.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will allow users to easily be able to receive useful updates from people they choose to get news from. The feature has been spotted on WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.8.0.75 update available on the TestFlight app.
WhatApp Channels encryption
WaBetainfo said that while Channels will be an encrypted space, messages received within a channel are not end-to-end encrypted because having an encryption for a broadcast feature makes little sense.
Channels won’t affect the end-to-end encryption of private messaging, which continues to be end-to-end encrypted, the report highlighted.
It can also be noted that this is an optional extension of private messaging, allowing people to “choose which channels they want to follow and no one else can see who they follow, regardless of whether they have added them as contacts or not.”
‘Channels’ will also accept handles, allowing users to find a certain WhatsApp channel by just typing their username into WhatsApp. “In addition, people won’t get auto-subscribed to channels as there are no algorithmic recommendations or social graphs pushing content to users that they didn’t choose to see,” the report noted.
This feature, which is still in development on the Android app, is intended to increase channel accessibility, making it easier for users to receive updates that they like, the report said.

In February this year, Facebook parent Meta launched a broadcast Channels feature in Instagram. “Broadcast channels are a public, one-to-many messaging tool for creators to directly engage with their followers at scale,” the company said.

Google Pixel Fold leaks have started surfacing at a faster rate as we approach the launch. The first Google foldable phone will likely launch at the May 10 I/O event. Google has not officially commented on the launch of its first Pixel foldable phone. However, looking at the number of leaks, it seems like the Pixel Fold launch is not far away. Adding to the leaks is a new live video revealing the Pixel Fold’s display details.

The live video uploaded by Twitter user Kuba Wojciechowski has revealed the cover and foldable display details of the Pixel Fold. The real-life video reveals that the foldable display is surrounded by fairly thick bezels at the top and bottom. The side bezels seem to be slightly narrower in comparison.On the outside, the Google Pixel Fold has a hole-punch cutout at the top centre for the front camera.

The video does not give a clear look at the bezels around the cover display of the Pixel Fold. It also does not confirm any details about the rear panel or the camera module design. However, thanks to the rumour mill, a lot about the design and specifications of the Pixel Fold has leaked online. Let’s take a look at the Google Pixel Fold specifications, features and other details ahead of its launch.

Google Pixel Fold Specifications and Features: What is Known So Far

The Google Pixel Fold design renders, which had leaked months ago, revealed that the foldable phone will have slightly thick bezels around the cover display. The OLED foldable display is said to be 7.6-inch diagonally tall and come with a 6:5 aspect ratio. It has 2208 × 1840-pixel resolution and 380 PPI. On the outside, the Full HD+ cover display is said to be 5.8 inches tall and come with a 17:9 aspect ratio. The foldable and cover displays will have a 120Hz refresh rate.

The rear panel has a protruding camera bar, which is not end-to-end like the Pixel 7 series. Tipster Jon Prosser recently revealed that the foldable phone will feature a 48MP main camera with an f/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilisation (OIS) support. It will feature a 10.8MP ultra-wide camera with a 121.1-degree field of view and an f/2.2 aperture. There will also be a 10.8MP dual PD telephoto camera with an f/3.05 aperture and 5x optical zoom support. The cover display will feature a 9.5MP f/2.2 front camera, whereas the top bezel of the foldable display will feature an 8MP front camera.

The Pixel Fold is said to feature Google’s Tensor G2 SoC. It will launch with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and offer up to 512GB of storage. There will be a beefy battery under the hood. While the tipster did not reveal the capacity, it is said that the Pixel Fold will offer beyond 24 hours of battery life.

The tipster revealed that the 256GB variant of the Pixel Fold will launch for $1,799 (roughly Rs 1,47,500), whereas the 512GB variant will cost $1919 (roughly Rs 1,57,400). The Pixel Fold will launch in two colours — Chalk and Obsidian.

Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has introduced a new feature for its users. Called the Keep in Chat, the feature allows users to retain disappearing messages, enabling users to hold on to text they may need later. However, the decision whether a receiver can keep a disappearing message or not lies with the sender.

“With Disappearing Messages conversations do not have to stick around forever – just like in person discussions. While this extra layer of privacy protects messages from falling into the wrong hands, sometimes there’s that occasional voice note or key piece of information you want to keep," WhatsApp said in a blog post. 

“Today we’re introducing “Keep in Chat," so you can hang on to texts you need for later, with a special superpower for the sender," it stated.

Here’s how Keep in Chat feature works

WhatsApp says that as part of the Keep in Chat feature, the sender will be notified in case someone keeps a disappearing message. He/she then will have the power to veto the receiver’s decision. 

If the sender has decided that the message can’t be kept by others, his/her decision is final. In that case, no one else can keep it and the message will be deleted when the timer expires. This way the sender will have the final say on how messages they send are protected.

In case the sender allows the receiver to save a disappearing message, one can see them, organized by chat in the Kept messages folder. Messages saved on WhatsApp will be noted with a bookmark icon.

Although the feature may not be widely used, as it requires sender approvals to save the message. If the sender has no issue with the message being retained, then why would he/she send a disappearing message in the first place? Having said that, it is good to have such a category.

Long pressing on disappearing messages in WhatsApp will let you save them, but only if the person who sent it says yes.

Something to consider before sending a risky text via WhatsApp is that now, disappearing messages are a bit more optional. Mark Zuckerberg is announcing a new tweak to the service’s burn-after-reading feature, which allows the recipient to long-press a message and choose to keep it.

WhatsApp describes the adjustment as a “sender superpower,” and assuming it all works as designed, it still keeps the sender in control of what ultimately happens to the message. That’s because the sender is sent a notification when a recipient tries to save a message, and the sender can then choose if it will disappear or be saved.

According to the company’s blog post, this gives senders the ability to “veto” a recipient’s attempt to save a message. “If you’ve decided your message can’t be kept by others, your decision is final, no one else can keep it, and the message will be deleted when the timer expires.”

If you decide to save a message you received and the sender is ok with that, then it will have a bookmark icon on it, and you’ll be able to see them in your kept messages folder.
