MacBook Air 2022 launch likely at WWDC, here is what to expect from Apple's next laptop - India Today

Apple is holding the WWDC this year on June 6. As usual, company CEO Tim Cook will take the centre stage to announce what Apple has been working on for the past year. These are mostly new iterations of the operating systems that power Apple’s iPhone, iPad, Watch, Mac, TV, and HomePod. But once in a while, Apple surprises everyone by launching new hardware products. This year’s WWDC is expected to be one of those events and in the lineup could be a new MacBook Air. Rumours are rife that Apple could introduce a redesigned MacBook Air with several changes. Let us talk about the MacBook Air 2022 and what to expect from it.

A new design

A major part of the rumours around the MacBook Air has pointed out that Apple could give its MacBook Air an overhaul this time. That may include a wide array of colourful options, just like last year’s 24-inch iMac. Since it is the MacBook Air, it will continue to be the lightest model in Apple’s Mac lineup, but certain changes in the design are expected. Apple is also likely to ditch the LCD on the MacBook Air for a MiniLED display, which the company first introduced on an iPad and later on the MacBook Pro last year. But there are some analysts that dispute this possibility.

With last year’s MacBook Pro, Apple showed its renewed interest in giving users more ports years after removing many of them. The MagSafe port returned to the MacBook Pro and this time it is expected to be available on the MacBook Air. There could also be two more Thunderbolt ports available on the machine. But even with the return of these important ports, there are going to be only so many of them on the MacBook Air, considering the thin profile of the laptop.

Rumours also suggest the new MacBook Air could feature an improved FaceTime HD camera that supports 1080p resolution. The existing lineup of MacBook Air models is restricted to 720p HD webcams.

The M2 chip

Apple is widely expected to be working on a successor to the M1 chip that was introduced back in 2020. The M2 chip will be the first one in Apple’s second-generation Silicon lineup and the upcoming MacBook Air is likely to be the first one to come with that processor. This chip is definitely going to be better in terms of performance and power efficiency than the first-generation M1, but the variants of this chip that arrived later, such as the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and the M1 Max, may still be more powerful. To counter them, Apple might launch M2 Pro, M2 Max, and M2 Ultra later. Additionally, the battery of the new MacBook Air will likely be more or less the same as the M1 MacBook Air, but in all likelihood, Apple could give better battery life to the 2022 MacBook Air.

Kuo: TSMC will manufacture A16 Bionic chip on 5nm process for 2022 iPhone 14 series - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

TSMC published its roadmap, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo spotted that this year the Taiwanese company will stick to 5nm process technology.

This comes as an indication the new A16 Bionic chip for this year’s iPhones will be manufactured on the same fab process as the A15, bringing minor improvements.

TSMC is ready to deliver 5nm chips, 3nm scheduled for H2 2022

The aligns well with rumors that the vanilla iPhone 14 will use the A15 chip, without the slight efficiency gains expected to come with the A16, reserved for the Pro series.

The analyst also stated the next-gen MacBook Air will stick to the M1 chip as the successor M2 will not be available until next year. However, Apple might deliver a similar SoC and slap a new name on it for marketing purposes, which isn’t unheard of in the world of mobile technology (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, cough, cough).

iOS 16 could support lock screen widgets, always-on display, and more - XDA Developers

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is only one week away! As this highly-anticipated, annual event approaches, relevant rumors have been increasingly surfacing online. We already know that the company is likely revealing iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, and macOS 13 during the main keynote. However, the new additions these operating systems will introduce remain vague for the time being. A fresh report shares what Apple could potentially be including in these major releases. Obviously, we can’t be sure until the Cupertino tech giant shares the details officially. If the reports turns out to be accurate, though, iOS 16 could be a major upgrade for the iPhone. It could potentially introduce lock screen widgets, always-on display support, and much more.

According to a new report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, iOS 16 could introduce some major changes. These might potentially include support for lock screen widgets — through a new wallpaper format — and always-on display on upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models. Mark additionally believes that Apple will support social network-like features in the Messages app — particularly in the audio messages department. It’s still unclear what these new functionalities could look like, though.

Apart from these, Gurman mentions that iPadOS 16 could bring changes to windowing and multitasking on the iPad. The company could be working on resizable app windows for its lineup of tablets. Lastly, the report states that Apple is making significant improvements to watchOS that affect day-to-day operating and navigation. The Apple Watch could finally be getting a low-battery mode that doesn’t shut down all of its smart features, too.

With WWDC22 being a week away, we can only sit back and be patient until the Cupertino tech giant reveals these updates officially. Until then, we can hope that the rumors are accurate and that Apple has even more in store for us.

Do you plan on installing iOS 16 beta on your iPhone? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung tops its highest global smartphone market share in 5 years - SamMobile - Samsung news

Samsung has just reached its highest global smartphone market share in five years. In April 2022, Samsung was the best-selling smartphone brand with a market share of 24% — the highest it’s been since June 2017.

Once again, the Galaxy S22 series and lower-cost Galaxy A phones weres the source behind this newfound success. Samsung hasn’t reached this level of global dominance since April 2017. Back then, it had a market share of 25%.

Samsung was only 1% shy of topping that record in April 2022. And while Samsung’s market share skyrocketed to 24% in terms of phone sales, Apple’s plummeted to 15%. Apple was followed by Xiaomi, the latter of which held 12% of global smartphone market sales in April.

How was Samsung this successful?

Aside from the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy A smartphones being great products, Samsung’s positive outcome was driven by several other factors, such as robust supply chain management and a healthy supply-demand balance.

Samsung also made a huge impact in India, and attractive promotions in core markets, including Latin America, have also helped the company expand its presence.

“Going forward, Samsung is likely to retain the leadership position in the global smartphone market in Q2” predict Counterpoint Research analysts, adding that the foldable segment also has a lot of potential for the Korean tech giant.

Samsung is gearing up to release the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 in August-September.

Samsung may cut smartphone production by 30 million units this year - CNBCTV18

South Korean electronics giant Samsung is reportedly planning to cut down its smartphone production by 30 million in 2022. The cut is likely to impact its mid-tier and flagship smartphones.

According to media reports, the three main reasons behind the cut include a decline in demand for smartphones globally due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing shortage of electronic components and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Samsung was reportedly going to produce 310 million units of smartphones in 2022, but it has since revised that target to 280 million units. Additionally, Samsung is also learnt to have amended orders to its electronic component manufacturing companies as global headwinds have also hit its components business. The company reportedly reduced its volume by up to a month for its components manufacturing companies.

Also read:

Earlier, other electronics and smartphone companies took similar steps to tide over the crisis. Companies like Apple had reportedly cut production of the iPhone SE by 20 percent and will reportedly not increase the number of iPhones being manufactured this year, Business Standard reported.

Samsung is also looking to exit the high-volume feature phone market in India. The company will now focus on launching smartphones above Rs 15,000, as per a report by ET Telecom. The move is in line with the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme introduced by the government, which requires a company to manufacture phones at a minimum factory value of Rs 15,000 to be eligible to get the benefits.

Xbox Series S MASSIVE price cut in India! Check out this gaming console deal - HT Tech

Xbox Series S massive price cut down to Rs. 30,000! Know how you can get this deal on Flipkart now.

Xbox Series S gets mega price cut in India! The most affordable gaming console from Microsoft has now gotten even more affordable — thanks to a new price cut on Flipkart. This deal makes owning the Xbox Series S a sweeter deal than ever. Know that the Xbox Series S is part of Microsoft’s latest generation consoles that also holds the Series X. Sadly, neither the Series X is available in India and nor it in enjoying any price cut deals.

The Xbox Series S was launched in India back in 2020 as an answer to the Sony PS5. However, the Series S was much cheaper back then compared to the Sony PlayStation 5 Digital version, with a retail price of Rs. 34,990. The price of the console has largely remained unchanged until now, when you can get a big discount of almost Rs. 5,000.

Xbox Series S is at its cheapest ever price!

The Xbox Series S carries a MRP of Rs. 34,990 but on Flipkart, you can get one for yourself right now at a price of Rs. 30,499. That is a lot of saving on this gaming console, enough to make you get an annual subscription of the Xbox Game Pass. Additionally, those making transaction via an ICICI Bank credit card can get an additional discount of Rs. 500.

For that price, you are not going to get anything remotely as capable as the Series S console. For the price of a basic Chromebook laptop, the Xbox Series S lets you stream 2K content, play games at up to 120Hz, and most importantly, lets you try all the latest games. More importantly, the Xbox Series S lets you access the Xbox Game Pass subscription, which lets you play all the latest games by paying a nominal monthly subscription. You also get the Game Pass on PCs but the Series S is a much cheaper way to do so.

The Xbox Series S also offers certain advantages such as Quick Resume, which lets you catch up on your favourite game from the point you left off, even without saving any progress.

However, note that the Xbox Series S is not as powerful as the Sony PlayStation 5 — it won’t be able to run the games at their best quality. Additionally, the Series S has a meagre 512GB storage, out of which only 364GB is available. Hence, you won’t be able to load up all your games on the storage.

Microsoft working on Keystone Xbox game streaming dongle - The Hans India

Microsoft working on 'Keystone' Xbox game streaming dongle

Microsoft working on Keystone Xbox game streaming dongle

Microsoft working on 'Keystone' Xbox game streaming dongle

Highlights

Microsoft isn't only working on a streaming device; it also has an Xbox app for TVs in the works.

As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft's xCloud streaming device, long in development, is going through some changes. Microsoft first announced the dedicated streaming dongle in June 2021, but in a statement provided to Windows Central, the company said it had moved away from the "current iteration" of the device, which it says is codenamed Keystone.

Here's Microsoft's complete statement shared with Windows Central:

Our vision for Xbox Cloud Gaming is unwavering, our goal is to enable people to play the games they want, on the devices they want, anywhere they want. As announced last year, we've been working on a game-streaming device, codename Keystone, that could be connected to any TV or monitor without the need for a console.

As part of any technical journey, we are constantly evaluating our efforts, reviewing our learnings, and ensuring we are bringing value to our customers. We have made the decision to pivot away from the current iteration of the Keystone device. We will take our learnings and refocus our efforts on a new approach that will allow us to deliver Xbox Cloud Gaming to more players around the world in the future.

It's not clear what these changes might be, and Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. But there's a lot of promise for a dedicated Xbox streaming device. While the Xbox Series X has been more widely available than the PS5, it's still not the easiest console to get your hands on and costs hundreds of dollars. So a (presumably) cheaper streaming device could be a more affordable way for many to watch the games Microsoft offers via the cloud, including, starting this month, Epic Games' Fortnite.

Microsoft isn't only working on a streaming device; it also has an Xbox app for TVs in the works. In November 2020, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer told The Verge that "I think you'll see it in the next 12 months," and while the company missed that deadline, VentureBeat reported on May 6 that an Xbox game streaming app for Samsung smart TVs "should debut in the next 12 months." In addition, VentureBeat said the streaming device is also set for sometime in the next 12 months.

While we don't know when Microsoft plans to share more about these projects, it has a big showcase scheduled for June 12.

Sony prepares to increase PS5 production, plans games portfolio expansion - Business Standard

Japanese tech giant is prepping on raising the production of its 5 (PS5) gaming console along with expanding its games portfolio as well.

The announcement arrives as the issues with the supply chain subsides, reports GizmoChina.

Despite the PS5 console launching back in November 2020, the tech giant has been struggling with its production due to the ongoing global chip shortage and other supply constraint issues.

"We are planning for heavy further increases in console production, taking us to production levels that we have never achieved before," Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, was quoted as saying.

This news arrives despite the Covid-19 lockdowns in China, but the executive stated that "things are definitely improving".

The brand has also projected that the sales of PS5 hit 18 million units in the financial year-end in March compared to 11.5 million units a year earlier.

The company has also announced that half of its game releases will be on PC and mobile by 2025.

A chart shown during the presentation, on annual investor day, suggested that this would be a major increase from its releases this year, when around a quarter of the company's releases will be on PC and mobile, with the remainder split between its 4 and 5 consoles

Instagram Was Down For Thousands Of Users Across The World, Services Back Up And Running - News18

Meta-owned social media platform Instagram was down for thousands of users across the world and in India. According to outage tracker Downdetector, thousands of users at around 11PM on May 26 experienced outage with Instagram. Instagram has addressed the issue and said late last night that the issue has been solved.

According to Downdetector, over 5,000 users reported outage with the photo sharing platform at around 11PM in the night of May 26. Users across the world noted issues with Meta’s app like not being able to log in, make posts, or see other people’s posts. In a statement, Instagram apologised for the inconvenience to users. The services seem to be up and running now and we at News18 faced no issues with using and posting from Instagram earlier this morning.

The outage was not tied to a specific region or country. There were no in-app outage notifications from the app, a feature that Meta has been testing since Facebook’s massive outage last year. In India, Downdetector showed close to 600 outage reports, but the platform is working just fine at this point.

Now, this is the second Instagram outage this week, at least for Indian users. On May 25 as well, Instagram was down in the morning for users in regions like Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Instagram is testing a feature to notify users of outages or technical issues directly on the photo-sharing app. The company launched the feature just two days after two outages disrupted the social media giant’s services last year in October. The test was launched in the United States and will go on for a few months, Instagram said in a blog post. On October 4, a six-hour long outage prevented the company’s 3.5 billion users from accessing its social media and messaging services, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger.

War Thunder Joins Top Gun: Maverick's Bandwagon With F-14 Tomcat & "Danger Zone" Update Teaser - Twinfinite

With the release of Top Gun: Maverick the interest in aviation seems to have spiked, and game developers have certainly been working hard with themed DLC, from Microsoft Flight Simulator to Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

War Thunder developer Gaijin Entertainment may not have an official movie license, but this certainly isn’t deterring them from jumping on the bandwagon.

With its tech trees having recently advanced as far as the A-10 Thunderbolt, it may be a little early to introduce Maverick’s F/A-18E Super Hornet, but there is another famous Top Gun aircraft ripe for the taking, and it’s the F-14 Tomcat.

That’s exactly what’s coming with the upcoming update teased today, aptly titled “Danger Zone.”

You can check the beloved carrier-borne fighter jet out in the trailer below.

War Thunder is currently playable for free (with the usual optional purchases that many believe aren’t all that optional) for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5.

If you’re unfamiliar with War Thunder, here’s an official description:

“War Thunder is the most comprehensive free-to-play, cross-platform, MMO military game dedicated to aviation, armoured vehicles, from the early 20th century to the most advanced modern combat units. Join now and take part in major battles on land, in the air, and at sea, fighting with millions of players from all over the world in an ever-evolving environment.

In War Thunder, aircraft, attack helicopters, ground forces and naval ships collaborate in realistic competitive battles. You can choose from over 2,000 vehicles and an extensive variety of combat situations many of which are exclusive. You can find yourself blasting your pursuers from a bomber turret, defending your teammates on the ground from an air raid with anti-aircraft guns, shooting down enemy planes with a firestorm from multiple rocket launchers, or trying to sink an enemy warship with a torpedo from a fast attack boat.”

iPhone 14 availability at risk as production prep falls behind schedule – Nikkei - 9to5Mac

iPhone 14 availability is at risk in the worst-case scenario, says a new report today, as preparatory work for production has fallen behind schedule.

Apple and its suppliers are said to be working hard to make up for lost time, but this is proving “challenging” given COVID-19 shutdowns in China

Background

Apple and other tech companies are facing unprecedented production problems at present, starting with the global chip shortage.

The shortage was created by a mix of factors. These include increased demand for technology during the pandemic, COVID-related production disruption, and a growing demand for chips by car-makers; as cars rely on increasing numbers of microprocessor units.

The biggest issue is not with CPUs and GPUs, but far more mundane chips like display drivers and power management systems. These relatively low-tech chips are used in a huge number of devices, including Apple ones.

This is being greatly worsened by widespread COVID-19 disruption in China, as the country continues to insist on citywide lockdowns in response to mere handfuls of cases, in what most believe to be an impossible attempt to completely eradicate the infection from the country. It was last month reported that half of Apple’s top 200 suppliers were based in lockdown-hit areas.

One recent report said that the worst-case scenario is the loss of 6-10 million iPhone units in the run-up to the launch of the iPhone 14 lineup.

iPhone 14 availability at risk

Lockdowns are now easing, but today’s Nikkei Asia report says that Apple and its suppliers are now struggling to make up for lost time.

Development of at least one of Apple’s new flagship iPhones for this year has fallen behind schedule due to disruptions from the monthlong COVID lockdowns in China, Nikkei Asia has learned.

Apple has told suppliers to speed up product development efforts to make up for the lost time, which in the worst-case scenario could impact the manufacturing schedule and initial production volumes of the new phones, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

“It is challenging to make up for the lost time. … Apple and its suppliers are working around the clock to speed up development,” said an executive with an Apple supplier, adding that the pace of reopening in Shanghai is “rather slow.”

Specifically, the delays are said to be to the engineering verification test (EVT). This is when suppliers finalize all the parts and the processes needed to begin production.

The schedule for Apple’s traditional late-September launch calls for all new iPhone models to complete the EVT stage by the end of June, but at least one of the models is said to have fallen three weeks behind. Unless the time can be somehow made up, one of the iPhones may not be available at the official launch.

Analysts cited aren’t optimistic, saying that there are still a lot of restrictions in place, and that it is likely to take one to two months until things return to normal – and that’s assuming no further lockdowns, which is by no means certain.

Any delay in availability is unlikely to change the timing of the traditional late-September keynote timing: Apple would simply advise later availability for any affected model(s). A precedent for this approach was set in 2017, when the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X were all announced – but the latter didn’t go on sale until November.

Apple had to make tough choices about final design of AR/VR headset: Report - Business Standard

Tech giant had to make tough choices about the final design of its augmented (AR) and (VR) headset as it reportedly chose a standalone AR/VR headset over a more powerful tethered design.

At one point, had not yet decided whether to move forward with a more powerful VR headset that would be paired with a base station or a standalone one, The Verge reported citing a media report.

While Apple's AR/VR leader Mike Rockwell preferred the version with the base station, which included a processor that eventually shipped as the M1 Ultra, according to The Information, executives chose to go with the standalone product.

That choice has had long-term effects on the development of the headset, the report said.

"By the time the decision was made, the device's multiple chips had already been in development for several years, making it impossible to go back to the drawing board to create, say, a single chip to handle all the headset's tasks," The Information reported.

"Other challenges, such as incorporating 14 cameras on the headset, have caused headaches for hardware and algorithm engineers," it added.

The report also includes details about Jony Ive's continued consultation on the project's design even after his official departure from Apple. Ive "prefers" a wearable battery, perhaps like what Magic Leap offers.

But other prototypes have had the battery in the headset's headband, and it's unclear which will be used in the final design, The Information said.

Apple reportedly showed the headset to its board of directors last week, so it could be nearing a public reveal. That said, it may not be announced until later this year, and it might not hit store shelves until 2023.

Developer’s CD Projekt Red‘s much-awaited PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is announced to release in the last three months of this year. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt updated version to release in Q4 2022

The game was announced back in September 2020 and was scheduled to release in 2021. This launch was pushed back to April this year “until further notice”. After this, the developer released a statement announcing that the game was not trapped in development hell. Also Read - Panchayat 2, RRR and more: Top films, series arriving on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus Hotstar this week

At that time, the developer’s in-house team had taken over the development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition from Saber Interactive (also handled the Nintendo Switch port of the base game). However, the developer now seems pretty confident that it will be able to release the upgraded version this year.

witcher

Along with The Witcher, CD Projekt had also scheduled the Cyberpunk 2077’s next-gen updates release for 2021, however, both got delayed. Cyberpunk 2077′ upgraded version finally landed in February this year with major improvements including ray tracing support and faster loading times.
Although the company has not yet revealed or teased any upcoming features or updates for this game, it is expected to get some Netflix series-inspired armour. When asked about the upcoming features, CD Projekt Red global community director Marcin Momot responded on Twitter stating that “there will be a time for that,” but nothing has been revealed from the company’s end so far.
