Following yesterday's price leak for the Galaxy S23 series in Australia, a new post from Reddit shows what is allegedly US pricing from an internal Verizon document. The good news for potential S23 buyers in the US is that Samsung will not raise prices on the new models compared to last year’s S22 series.

Taking a closer look at the leaked document Samsung Diamond appears to be the internal codename for the new S23 series with DM1 being the Galaxy S23 while DM2 is the S23+ and DM3 is the S23 Ultra. The baseline Galaxy S23 will start at $799 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage trim. Samsung will also offer an 8/256GB version of the S23 though the listing does not provide any pricing details.

On Reddit, users also piled on, sharing their past experiences with Apple's trade-in program and the "low value" returned for their Macs. "My base model M1 Pro trades in at $725. 63.7% drop in value in a single generation. Not great," one Reddit user said. Another user, on the flip side, shared how Apple gave them $700 last year for an Intel-based 2016 MacBook.
I got $700 for my 2016 i7 last year using Apple trade in. Blew my mind I was able to get anything for it. Used it to buy a M1 Pro. Only deprecating 60% in 6 years for a machine that's basically at the end of its life, was pretty good. Looks like Apple doesn't really need used Apple Silicon, so the price is a lot lower.

Over 290 MSI motherboards are reportedly affected by an insecure default UEFI Secure Boot setting settings that allows any operating system image to run regardless of whether it has a wrong or missing signature.
This discovery comes from a Polish security researcher named Dawid Potocki, who claims that he did not receive a response despite his efforts to contact MSI and inform them about the issue.
The issue, according to Potocki, impacts many Intel and AMD-based MSI motherboards that use a recent firmware version, affecting even brand-new MSI motherboard models.
UEFI Secure Boot
Secure Boot is a security feature built into the firmware of UEFI motherboards that ensures only trusted (signed) software can execute during the boot process.
"When the PC starts, the firmware checks the signature of each piece of boot software, including UEFI firmware drivers (also known as Option ROMs), EFI applications, and the operating system," explains Microsoft in an article about Secure Boot.
"If the signatures are valid, the PC boots, and the firmware gives control to the operating system."
To validate the safety of boot loaders, OS kernels, and other essential system components, Secure Boot checks the PKI (public key infrastructure) that authenticates the software and determines its validity on every boot.
If the software is unsigned or its signature has changed, possibly because it was modified, the boot process will be stopped by Secure Boot to protect the data stored on the computer.
This security system is designed to prevent UEFI bootkits/rootkits (1, 2, 3) from launching on the computer and to warn users that their operating system has been tampered with after the vendor shipped the system.
Default MSI settings cause insecure boots
Potocki claims that MSI's firmware update version' 7C02v3C,' released on January 18, 2022, changed a default Secure Boot setting on MSI motherboards so that the system will boot even if it detects security violations.
"I decided to setup Secure Boot on my new desktop with the help of sbctl. Unfortunately, I have found that my firmware was accepting every OS image I gave it, no matter if it was trusted or not," explains the researcher in his writeup.
"As I have later discovered on 2022-12-16, it wasn't just broken firmware; MSI had changed their Secure Boot defaults to allow booting on security violations(!!)."
This change was to mistakenly set the "Image Execution Policy" setting in the Firmware to "Always Execute" by default, allowing any image to boot the device as normal.

As you can see from the image above, even though Secure Boot is enabled, it's 'Image Execution Policy' setting is set to 'Always Execute', allowing the system to boot even if there are security violations.
This effectively breaks the Secure Boot feature as untrusted images can still be used to boot the device
Potocki explains that users should set the Execution Policy to "Deny Execute" for "Removable Media" and "Fixed Media," which should only allow signed software to boot.
Changing the unsafe option(dawidpotocki.com)
The researcher says MSI never documented the change, so he had to trace back the introduction of the insecure default using IFR (UEFI Internal Form Representation) to extract configuration options information.
Potocki then used this information to determine which MSI motherboards were impacted by the issue. A complete list of the over 290 motherboards affected by this insecure setting is available on GitHub.
If you're using an MSI motherboard in that list, go over to BIOS settings and check that the "Image Execution Policy" is set to a safe option.
If you haven't upgraded your motherboard firmware since January 2022, the introduction of a bad default shouldn't be a reason to postpone it any further, as software updates contain important security fixes.
BleepingComputer has contacted MSI to request a comment on the above and whether they plan to change the default setting via a new update, but we are still waiting to receive a response.

Apple Inc. rolled out its first new products of 2023 on Tuesday, offering faster versions of its high-end MacBook Pro laptops and the Mac mini desktop.
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros look the same as the prior models — which launched at the end of 2021 — but add more powerful M2 Pro and M2 Max chips to replace the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. The new notebooks mark Apple’s first expansion of the M2 chip, which debuted in the MacBook Air and a low-end MacBook Pro last year.
The new Macs bolster a product line that brought in $40.2 billion last year, accounting for more than 10% of the tech giant’s revenue. The company also plans to bring a variation of the M2 chip to its high-end Mac Pro desktop computer later this year. And Apple is working on new versions of the MacBook Air, including a larger model with a 15-inch screen.
The chips in the latest models offer modest performance gains and continue Apple’s shift away from using Intel Corp. processors inside of its Mac computers. The M2 Pro will now sport as many as 12 main processing cores — an indicator of performance — up from a maximum of 10 cores. The graphics capabilities will now reach up to 19 cores, up from a prior high of 16. The M2 Max doubles performance for graphics, climbing to as many as 38 cores from a prior maximum of 32 cores.
The laptops also get a memory boost, to a maximum of 96 gigabytes on the 16-inch model and 64 gigabytes on the 14-inch version. That’s up from a prior limit of 32 gigabytes on both. Storage continues to top out at 8 terabytes. Battery life has been slightly increased, going to 18 hours from 17 hours on the 14-inch model and up to 22 hours from 21 hours on the 16-inch variation.
Apple also said that the new MacBook Pros gaine WiFi 6E, which can offer faster wireless performance in some circumstances, in addition to a more powerful HDMI port for driving more advanced external displays.
The Mac minis also look the same as the prior model and arrive more than two years after the last update to the machine. The Mac mini adds the same M2 chip as the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, while the M2 Pro version includes the same chip as in the new high-end MacBook Pro.
The updated 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1999, while the 16-inch version continues to be priced at $2499. The Mac mini costs $599, $100 less than the prior version. All of the new Macs begin shipping on Jan. 24, Apple said.
Bloomberg first reported on Apple’s plans for the new MacBook Pros and Mac minis last year, including the expectation that they would launch in early 2023. Apple had originally aimed to roll out the new machines in 2022, and the delay is expected to weigh on its most recent quarterly results. The company warned investors that the lack of a MacBook Pro update would negatively affect its holiday sales, which Apple will disclose on Feb. 2.
Besides the new Macs, the Cupertino, California-based company is planning to use 2023 to introduce a mixed-reality headset, its first major new product category since the Apple Watch went on sale in 2015. It’s also working on the iPhone 15 line, a new HomePod speaker and Apple Watches with updated processors.
In the longer run, Apple is aiming to bring touch screens to the MacBook Pro beginning in 2025. The move would give Apple’s high-end computers better parity with devices from Microsoft Corp., Dell Technologies Inc. and other laptop makers.
