Microsoft Just Announced Bad News For Android Apps On Windows 11 - Screen Rant

Microsoft has stated that Windows 11 will be released on October 5, 2021, which is great for anyone eager to get the new updates, however, there was some bad news shared about Android apps. Since the operating system will be rolled out in phases, not every new feature will be available at the beginning. For those particularly waiting on Android app support with Windows 11, the wait will go on a little longer.

With the release of Windows 10 in 2015, it was said to be the last version of Microsoft's operating system and changes would come as incremental updates rather than a major version change. Six years later Windows 11 was announced and there haven't been many complaints. Windows 10 was generally recognized as a major improvement over Windows 8.1 and Microsoft seems to have done it again. The refreshed look of the next version and improved user interface have been well received. The challenge will be to keep the rollout from taking too long while maintaining backward compatibility.

While Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 will be available on October 5, 2021, the announcement also confirms the use of Android apps with the latest version will not be available at launch. Instead the app support may take several months to appear in an Insider Preview version of the operating system. The technology is a joint effort involving Intel and Amazon, and although collaborative efforts sometimes take longer they often result in a more thorough solution. The delay could mean Instagram, TikTok, and other Android apps that work best within a phone interface might not be usable on a Windows 11 PC until 2022. Windows 10 has limited support for Android, so anyone upgrading will lose that capability.

Windows 11 Will Support Android Apps

Windows 11 Android apps

When Windows 11 was announced, Microsoft said that support for Android apps would be expanded, appearing in the Start bar as well as the taskbar just like a Windows app. These mobile apps will become available in the Microsoft Store via Amazon's Android App Store, which will be pre-installed, according to Microsoft. This seems to be an answer to the new ability of M1 Mac computers to run iPhone and iPad apps, which also appear within the system just like a Mac app. Windows 10's Android support was limited to a few Samsung phones, so when the update arrives, it will be a nice feature that opens up access to many more users.

Unfortunately, the recent news from Microsoft indicates it will be several months before Android app support comes. In the meantime, Windows 10 users that can install Android apps and make use of this feature regularly, might want to hold off on upgrading to Windows 11 until Android compatibility is ready. Keeping a smartphone nearby the computer isn't much of a hardship and Windows 11 has enough upgrades that most will probably want to install the free update in October and wait for the extra features, such as Android support to arrive later in 2022.
