PC gaming in 2022 - the next frontier - Techradar

Audio player loading…

In all the years we’ve been playing the best PC games, 2022 has by far been the weirdest year. Not only are things like ray tracing and AI-accelerated supersampling industry-wide buzzwords, but huge hardware shortages have made the hobby more expensive than it’s ever been. And because the world of PC gaming is in such a strange place, we thought it’d be a good time to take a look into the future and try to guess what PC gaming will look like in the coming year.

And it looks like 2022 is going to be a pretty exciting year - new graphics cards and a whole lineup of games that won’t be hampered by the last-generation consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One.

Frustration could come hand in hand with that excitement, though, especially if you’ve been mashing your F5 key in hopes of getting a new graphics card, only for new ones to come out before you can buy an RTX 3080 at a reasonable price. Who knows - indie games could become even more popular on PC.

RTX 3080

Please give us more graphics cards

One of the hardest things to deal with in 2021 was the huge shortage in silicon. While this affected the entire world, it was a huge blow to PC gamers that were looking to upgrade – especially following the launch of some of the best graphics cards we’ve seen in years.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 launched in September 2020 and was a huge upgrade over the previous generation’s RTX 2080 Super, but even now, more than a year after it first hit the shelves, it’s incredibly difficult to find. It would be one thing if it was just out of stock, but we’ve been seeing people buying up the cards and reselling them at a huge markup to the point where you can expect to pay double what Nvidia initially charged.

And now that we’re expecting to see Nvidia unveil the RTX 4080 in late 2022, we just hope that it becomes at least a little easier to get your hands on a new graphics card. It’s easy to imagine that there are going to be a lot of frustrated folks if they’ve had to wait on the sidelines for two generations because there hasn’t been enough supply to upgrade their gaming rigs, especially as PC games jump up in system requirements, as the Xbox One and PS4 finally get left behind.

Truly next-gen

As PC gamers, whenever we hear console manufacturers talk about “next generation” technology, we always have to hold ourselves back from chuckling a little bit. Most of the tech that’s in the PS5 and Xbox Series X has been in PCs for years, and now we’re starting to see more games take advantage of it.

But one of the biggest advancements is in storage technology. Both the Xbox Series X and PS5 have incredible PCIe 4.0 SSDs, which is certainly not something new, but also have new storage APIs which let processors access the storage a lot faster. Luckily in Windows 11 we now have access to DirectStorage, which is a storage API which will let PC games have access to your computer’s SSD much in the same way that the new consoles do it. That means that all the promises of gigantic and seamless open worlds that load environments so fast they don’t need loading screens might actually come to fruition soon. We’re not sure if it’s going to happen in 2022, but we hope to at least see it getting started.

And of course we can’t talk about gaming tech these days without mentioning ray tracing. Everyone’s favorite buzzword has been seen in more and more games these days, and it’s starting to be rare to see AAA games launch without some form of it. We have been told repeatedly by folks both at Nvidia and AMD that ray tracing will eventually supersede rasterization as the default rendering method. That always sounded a bit pie-in-the-sky for us, but seeing just how many games have worked the tech in recently, we don’t think it’ll go the same way as PhysX did. Ray tracing is slowly moving from a buzzword to a mainstay in PC gaming and honestly, we’re here for it – as long as we can solve the GPU supply issues.

Game prices can’t change

One thing that has been really hard to swallow with the launch of the new consoles is the jump in price for new games, and luckily it doesn’t seem like that has quite taken root on the PC. But that could change!

We’ve already seen the start of it. When Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade launched on the Epic Games Store in December 2021, it launched for $69.99, even though it's basically a port of an old game. And honestly we won’t stand for it.

One of the biggest benefits of PC gaming is that while the initial hardware is more expensive, it's genuinely cheaper to buy games. While that usually does only apply to games that have been out for a while, with big seasonal sales like the Steam Winter Sale going on right now – this is the last platform where games should be that expensive.

So heading into the new year, we really do hope that FF7R is the exception rather than the new rule. Because while it almost seems like old news that games are suddenly 15% more expensive, it’s still relatively recent, and there’s still time to push back against it on PC.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne on PC

At this point, nearly seven years after its initial release on PS4 we probably will never see Bloodborne make its debut on PC – at least beyond playing it through PS Now. But that doesn’t mean we’re ever going to stop asking for it. There are some (us included) who think it’s the best game From Software has made to date, and we would love to see it make its way to our favorite gaming platform.

And while this has always been something we never expected to actually materialize, we’re starting to get a little bit of hope, mostly because Sony has started to put more and more games on Windows. We’re going to see Uncharted and God of War in 2022 at least, and while we’ll never get new PS5 games the same day as the console players, we really don’t think it’s too much to ask for a 7 year old title.

And while we do just want to play Bloodborne while having Discord interrupting us in the background like we do with all our games, we especially want to see Bloodborne on PC because that’s where the game could reach its true potential.

The original launch on PS4, while one of the best games ever made, is still kind of a mess on a technical level to this day. There are sections of the game where the framerate tanks, and every time you die you have to go through a lengthy load time making an already punishing game even more frustrating.

On PC, Bloodborne could easily run at 4K with a 60 fps locked framerate. And while we usually want everything running at a minimum 60 fps, it’s even more important with a game that relies so heavily on reaction times and fast-paced combat.

Listen, we know it’s never going to happen, but let us dream.

Samsung will reveal Exynos chip with AMD graphics in January - XDA Developers

Samsung started working closely with AMD back in 2019, with the goal of improving the graphics capabilities of Samsung’s Exynos System-on-a-Chip (SoC) designs. Samsung confirmed at the time that the improved GPU capabilites would arrive roughly within two years, and a new tweet from the company confirms it might be ready for the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S22.

Samsung published a tweet on Thursday teasing “the next Exynos with the new GPU born from RDNA 2,” with a reveal date of January 11, 2022.

RDNA is the codename for AMD’s current Radeon graphics architecture, which first arrived on the Radeon RX 5000 series of desktop graphics cards. RDNA 2 is used in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, as well as AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards. Integrating the technology into a mobile chip could provide significant improvements over the usual Adreno graphics found in most ARM chips (which is also based on AMD technology).

Previous leaks and rumors point to the Galaxy S22 using an Exynos 2200 chipset, at least outside of North America (where Samsung’s phones usually have Snapdragon chips). The company also announced back in October that a future Exynos chip would support ray tracing graphics. There are also rumors that Samsung might sell Galaxy S22 phones with Snapdragon chips in regions that previously only had Exynos models available, such as India.

It remains to be seen if the new Exynos will compete with Apple’s mobile chipsets, which have maintained a significant lead over anything available from Samsung, Qualcomm, and MediaTek for years. Android is still the preferred gaming platform for many, thanks to the abundance of hardware options and more open software platform, but more often than not, Apple has still claimed victory in gaming performance.

LG’s OLED EX TVs produce 30% more brightness and thinner bezels than conventional OLEDs - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

LG is introducing its next generation of TV panels called OLED EX. These new panels can output up to 30% more brightness while reducing the size of the bezels needed around a TV. Based on a 65-inch TV, the bezel has been reduced from 6mm down to 4mm thin.

The “EX” bit comes from “Evolution” and “eXperience” which is a cute acronym for LG, but what does that really mean aside from marketing speak?

LG’s OLED EX TVs produce 30% more brightness and thinner bezels than conventional OLEDs

The improvements come from deuterium, one of the two stable isotopes of hydrogen. LG Display has figured out how to extract deuterium (also known as ‘heavy hydrogen’) from water to apply it to the organic light-emitting devices. Deuterium lets the display emit brighter light than using hydrogen with higher efficiency over time.

The other half of OLED EX is a ‘personalized algorithm’ developed by LG Display that predicts the power usage of individual pixels and can improve the power efficiency of the panels’ output.

LG will begin the transition of all its OLED products to OLED EX at LG Display’s OLED production plants in Paju South Korea and Guangzhou, China in Q2 2022.

Despite the global TV market experiencing a 12 percent decline this year, we still observed a 70 percent growth in OLED sales […] With our new OLED EX technology, we aim to provide even more innovative high-end customer experiences through the evolution of our OLED technology, algorithms and designs.” – Dr. Oh Chang-ho, Executive Vice President & head of the TV Business Unit at LG Display

LG will be showcasing its next generation displays, translucent screens, and high-end TVs at CES 2022 in Vegas kicking off next week.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE unboxed and reviewed by retailer buyer in South Africa - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Samsung is expected to announce the long-delayed Galaxy S21 FE next month, though conflicting reports have us guessing the launch will take place either during (January 3 or 4) or shortly following CES 2022 (January 11). A customer has already been able to purchase the unreleased phone at a retailer in South Africa.

Reddit user u/UnknownWon posted several nuggets of useful information that most of us get to benefit from. The user posted an unboxing video that shows the initial setup of the S21 FE, and we can spot the slim box that omits the charger.

More recently, u/UnknownWon posted a mini review of the phone, confirming that the phone has a 4,500 mAh battery that supports Fast Charging and Fast Wireless Charging as per the settings menus. He also suggests that the phone suffers from a green tint but bases this off the comparison of the display on his Poco X3. He mentions there’s no way to manually adjust the white balance of the display.

u/UnknownWon also expressed that the phone’s hardware feels “lighter”, “comfortable” and “premium” compared to his Poco X3 – which feels “sticky” and “cheap” by comparison. The triple cameras also appear to use the same sensors as those from the S20 FE.

Another thing that the customer posted about in the Reddit thread was that the in-display fingerprint scanner was optical versus the S21 series’ ultrasonic sensors. Also, the phone comes with 6GB of RAM, and the dualSIM variant in his region came with a Snapdragon 888 chipset and not the Exynos 2100 from the other S21 models in that region. We wonder if Samsung would release a 4G-only version powered by Exynos as it did with the S20 FE.

Finally, the reviewer posted a few sample photos shot with the S21 FE and they can be seen here. There’s at least one sample for each camera.

As per previous reports and leaks, the Galaxy S21 FE will have a 6.41-inch AMOLED screen, and the selfie camera will be updated to a 32MP module. The phone will be available in Olive, Black, White, and Purple options with an expected starting price of $699.

PUBG: New State Anti-Cheat Update to Target Gamers Who ‘Intentionally’ Play With Cheaters, Says Kraft... - Gadgets 360

PUBG: New State has received an update to its anti-cheat system, according to publisher Krafton. The new update promises stronger measures towards abusive players and cheaters in the popular multiplayer and battle royale game. The updated anti-cheat system went live on PUBG: New State on Tuesday, and will target gamers who play alongside cheaters in the game. Krafton recently updated its policy to ban cheaters devices, in an attempt to reduce cheating on Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), the version of PUBG Mobile that was released in India earlier this year.

Krafton stated on Twitter that it had updated the anti-cheat system on the popular PUBG: New State title, which has already crossed the 45 million download mark weeks after it was released. Krafton also shared details of the anti-cheat update rolled out on Tuesday, on Facebook. The new update includes “strengthened measures against players who intentionally play in a Squad with someone who is using unauthorised third-party programs”, in addition to new anti-cheat system measures and updates to the existing system.

Many online multiplayer games are affected by hackers and cheaters who seek to gain an unfair advantage over other players in the game. However, the use of unauthorised programs can ruin the experience for legitimate gamers, and PUBG: New State is no exception. Meanwhile, Krafton regularly updates the game's anti-cheat systems to detect cheaters and hackers using ‘unauthorised programs' to cheat in the game.

Some of the measures previously implemented by Krafton to reduce cheating include preventing PUBG: New State from running on devices with Developer options enabled. The company also recently implemented a new device ban policy for cheaters on BGMI. Krafton has begun permanently banning the devices of gamers who cheat in BGMI, preventing them from being used to create additional accounts. The publisher has not yet revealed whether it will bring the same device ban policy to PUBG: New State in a future update.

Oppo Find X5 or Find X5 Pro gets pictured in renders based on schematics - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Yesterday we heard that Oppo might skip the number 4 and its unlucky connotations in Chinese culture, and go straight from X3 to X5 in its Find series of high-end smartphones. Not just that, but apparently there will be no less than three Find X5 branded handsets - we're guessing vanilla X5, X5 Pro, and X5 Lite, since that's what the company has done in the past.

Oppo Find X5 or Find X5 Pro gets pictured in renders based on schematics

Today a few renders based on "early prototype schematics" have been outed, and it's unclear whether these show the Find X5 or the Find X5 Pro, so keep that in mind.

Oppo Find X5 or Find X5 Pro gets pictured in renders based on schematics

As you can see, the curved glass around the camera island has lived on from the Find X3 Pro, but the island itself... looks incredibly weird with its irregular shape. Maybe this is an acquired taste sort of thing, we'll have to wait and see.

Oppo Find X5 or Find X5 Pro gets pictured in renders based on schematics

The Find X5 was previously rumored to sport the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC, while the Find X5 Pro will allegedly get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Again according to past rumors, the Find X5 series would come with a 6.78-inch 120 Hz AMOLED screen (which might be 1080p+ in the X5 and QHD+ in the Pro), at least two 50 MP cameras on the rear, and a 5,000 mAh battery with 80W (or 125W) charging.

Oppo Find X5 or Find X5 Pro gets pictured in renders based on schematics

There's no microscope camera on the back of the model pictured here, which means either this isn't the Find X5 Pro, or Oppo has decided to give up on that gimmick after a year. Then again, there's also no periscope zoom lens, and the Find X3 Pro didn't have one either.

OnePlus 10 Pro to iPhone SE 3: What lies in store for you in 2022 - ETTelecom.com

OnePlus 10 Pro to iPhone SE 3: What lies in store for you in 2022New Delhi: Despite the onslaught of Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns, smartphone business scaled new heights globally in 2021. With new launches lined up, the smartphone industry is expected to keep up the momentum despite chip shortage and supply chain constraints.

Smartphone makers such as Apple, Google, OnePlus, Samsung and more are now set to launch the next-generation of products to attract the Indian consumers.

These top brands are expected to offer smoother performance for playing mobile games, 120Hz screen refresh rates, 108MP shooters and fast-charging options.

Check out the list of smartphones set to be released in 2022 with top-end features.

OnePlus 10 Pro

Smartphone maker OnePlus is all set to launch its next flagship handset 'OnePlus 10 Pro' on January 4 and the pre-registrations for the phone have already begun in the Chinese market.

The smartphone is expected to sport a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 2K resolution. The screen will be curved on either side and sport a hole-punch cutout at the top left corner.

The smartphone's camera setup will feature a 48MP primary camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.3x optical zoom. For selfies, the phone will come with an improved 32MP front camera sensor.
The OnePlus 10 Pro will come with support for 80W fast charging.

Apple iPhone SE 3

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a third-generation iPhone SE in the first quarter of 2022.

The new phone will have the new chipset -- the 5nm A15 Bionic, adding support for 5G networks. Price-wise, the phone is expected to cost the same as the iPhone SE (2020) in China and around the world -- $399.

Despite having a small-form factor, the new device will most likely be based on the iPhone XR design.

The Apple iPhone SE 3 will feature 5G connectivity instead of 4G seen in the iPhone SE 2020. The smartphone is also expected to come with improved performance with upgraded internals.

The upcoming iPhone is expected to feature a 4.7-inch LCD with bottom and top bezels, Touch-ID sensor/home button in the same aluminum body.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung is planning to launch its next premium flagship S22 series, the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ as well as the Galaxy S22 Ultra soon.

the Galaxy S22 Ultra, will be better at stabilising videos. An AI-assisted Wide Shift OIS feature will help in achieving better stabilisation of videos, effectively reducing camera shake by four times when compared to the S21 Ultra.

The upcoming flagship smartphone is also expected to come with a new "AI picture quality enhancement mode" to provide better 108MP images.

The smartphone is expected to come with a quad-camera featuring an enhanced 108MP ISOCELL HM3 (could be ISOCELL HM4) primary camera, a 12 MP ultrawide sensor, and two new 10MP Sony telephoto sensors with 3x and 10x zoom capabilities. The phone may also feature a 40MP front camera.

Samsung usually ships its flagship devices in both a Snapdragon and its proprietary Exynos chip variant, the version launched in India has traditionally been the latter. This time, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powered Galaxy S22 series is heading to India as well.

Xiaomi 12

The Xiaomi 12 is said to sport a curved screen with a centre punch-hole for the selfie camera, 120 Hz refresh rate and "2K" resolution, dual speakers, and a triple rear camera system with a 50 MP main sensor from Samsung or Sony.

Other possible features include 120W fast charging and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, as per the report.

A recent report said that the vanilla model of Xiaomi 12 will feature support for 100W fast charging technology, which is unlike 120W fast charging technology that is included in Mi 10 Ultra and Mi 11T Pro among others.

As chipmaker Qualcomm is soon expected to unveil its next flagship mobile chipset, which will be a direct successor to the Snapdragon 888, Xiaomi 12 is tipped to be the first phone to be powered by the new chip.

Google Pixel 6a

Pixel is another eagerly-awaited smartphone in 2022. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Google Pixel 6a is rumoured to pack a dual rear camera setup featuring a 12.2MP primary camera, and a 12MP camera.

The smartphone may come with a single front camera setup for selfies, an 8MP primary camera.

The smartphone is said to feature a mid-range Tensor processor, probably a Tensor Lite SoC or Snapdragon 778G.

Pixel 6a may have 6GB or 8GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage running on Android 12 out of the box, with guaranteed up to 3 years of version upgrades and security updates up to 5 years.

MIUI 13 launch is set for Tuesday, December 28 — alongside the debut of the Xiaomi 12 series. The new MIUI version is claimed to deliver a list of performance improvements over MIUI 12.5. Xiaomi also claims that MIUI 13 will deliver improved “system fluency” and stability. The next-generation MIUI will come pre-installed on the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro. However, MIUI 13 is also reportedly coming to a list of existing Xiaomi models, including Mi Mix 4, Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11 Pro, and Redmi K40 series, among others.

Alongside announcing the launch date, Xiaomi has promised to deliver 20–26 percent improved “fluency” for system apps and 15–52 percent improved “fluency” for third-party apps in comparison with MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Version. iPhone other storage: Know what it is, how to clean it and benefits too - HT Tech

iPhone other storage must be cleared and the benefits to be derived is that you boost speed and save extra space.

iPhones now offer more storage than ever, however, they don't come with the option to add a microSD card. This might make your device run low on storage. However, there is a hidden, mystery storage on an iPhone known as "Other" storage that stores a myriad of leftover files and caches. This also makes your iPhone slow down. Hence one must keep cleaning iPhone other storage in order to save extra space and boost speed. Here’s all you need to know about iPhone other storage problem.

iPhone other storage: What is it?

While checking the iPhone storage in the phone's Settings tab, you will see a colour bar denoting the available storage which includes "Other" storage option. There are a lot of "Other" storages, but that could be down to running the iOS 14 beta.

These other storages contain a huge number of files that don’t fit into any other category such as downloaded Netflix videos, cache from your web browser of choice, or simply a huge amount of messages with attachments. Here’s how you clean it up

How to clean iPhone other storage

There are several ways to clean these other storages.

1: Clear Old Messages

Step 1: In settings, go to the “Messages” tab and open the “Message History”.

Step 2: Now, select the option to keep messages of up to 1 year or 30 days, and clear rest of them.

2: Clear Browser Caches

Safari caches can be pretty dense with data, and can take a toll on storage. Hence, you need to clean these caches on a regular basis.

Step 1: Go to Settings, head to “Safari”

Step 2: Then, “Clear History and Website Data '' and it's done.

You can also find an option to clear cache, in Chrome’s settings tab. Open Google Chrome, open “Settings”, and then click on “Privacy”, and “Clear Browsing Data”. Select the ones that you want to delete or you can mark all and clear them to free up some space.

3: Backup and Reset

This step is usually avoided as it leads to deletion of all data, media, passwords and everything from your phone. However, sometimes it’s actually easier to simply start again, restoring the device from a backup.

To do this, you will have to first save all the data and media and other important things to another device.

Step 1: Go to “Settings”, and open “General” tab

Step 2: Now click on “Reset” and “Erase All Content and Settings”. This will wipe all the data from your phone.

Our pick of the best to-do apps in iOS 15 for 2022 - Techradar

Audio player loading…

We all live busy, hectic lives these days and, with so many distractions around us to draw our attention away from the things we need to get done, we could use some organization.

The iPhone has an ever-improving to-do app built right in, but if you’re looking to take things to the next level with some more advanced options, there are also some very impressive third-party reminder apps available to you.

If you are constantly forgetting when your cars are due for a service or when you need to pay that important bill then you could use a to-do app.

Below, we highlight five of the best to-do apps on iOS to help you get things done and keep your focus on what's important.

Apple Reminders

Reminders app in iOS 15

The Reminders app from Apple is on every iOS device out of the box. As with other Apple built-in apps, it can feel quite basic initially, but for many, this clean simplicity is what makes it shine. Dig a little deeper, however, and you'll find more depth to the app than you’d imagine.

A major plus point of the Reminders app is its deep integration with the system itself. As you’d expect, it works well with Siri, which can even be invoked within apps like Mail with the phrase ‘remind me about this email.’ This will alert you at the chosen time and also let you jump directly back to the app.

Stock Apple apps can go years without any real updates, but Reminders has been refreshed year after year for some time now. With iOS 15, quite a few new features have helped the app keep up with some premium third-party apps.

Tagging was introduced, so now you can easily group and view all items with the same tag via the new Custom Smart lists feature. One long-requested feature that made it into the iOS 15 release is natural-language support, so you can type statements such as ‘Call Mike every other Friday at 5PM.’

Other useful features include the ability to add picture attachments to tasks and an option to be reminded about a due item the next time you message the chosen individual. Now you’ve got a strong to-do app ready to be put to use.

GoodTask

GoodTask in iOS 15

If Apple’s Reminders app is the Ford pickup of the to-do world, then GoodTask is the Tesla Cybertruck equivalent. GoodTask takes everything you get in Reminders and soups it up.

GoodTask is free, but there's an in-app purchase of $9.99 / £8.99 / AU$14.99 to fully unlock the app. It's based on Reminders, but it adds a lot more advanced features not available in Apple's app. Some of these features include quick actions that can be customized to help you enter new to-do items quicker, such as marking the item due in +5 hours or automatically tagging it.

The app offers a lot of options to customize both the layout and theme to really make it fit around the way you work and not vice versa. GoodTask is a universal app, so it works across all iOS and iPadOS devices. It also has a very good macOS and Apple Watch app to round things off.

GoodTask is the ideal app for anyone that doesn’t want to sign up for yet another service that will hold your data, or for those that like the Reminders experience but need more power-user features that the stock app just doesn’t offer currently.

Todoist

Todoist in iOS 15

While the first two options on this list focused on Apple device users, many people don’t have the luxury of using just one device manufacturer to get their work done. There are also some very good to-do apps for iOS that can be used across Android, Windows and the web. One of the best examples of a truly cross-platform to-do app is Todoist. The ability to use this service both in and out of the Apple ecosystem makes this a strong option for those of us that use a Windows PC for work but use Apple hardware and software outside the office.

Todoist has been around for a long time and offers a clean, easy-to-use interface that looks at home on any platform and syncs seamlessly between each one. A strong selling point beyond the option of using it truly anywhere is the fantastic natural-language reminder entry, which lets you describe what you want it to do in a natural, non-robotic way. You could say something like: ‘Remind me to pay the gas bill on the 27th of every month’ and Todoist would set this recurring event for you automatically.

Todoist is a freemium product, which means the app is free to download but includes an optional subscription to add extra functionality. The free tier is, actually, very generous. The extras you get with a subscription, such as the ability to add up to 25 people to each project, themes, and custom icons are nice to have, but definitely don’t hinder a single user from using the app to great effect.

If you really want to go to the next level with your tasks, Todoist even offers a Kanban board view so you can get a better visualization of various interconnected tasks across a large project. For those unfamiliar, a Kanban board allows you to display all tasks on a single board, which you can drag between statuses such as ‘not started’, ‘in progress’, and ‘done’.

If you’re looking for a feature-rich to-do app that works perfectly on any device you use then Todoist may be the perfect app for you.

Things 3

Things 3 in iOS 15

Of all of the to-do apps in this roundup, Things 3 is the least flexible both in terms of functionality and options for using it across multiple, non-Apple platforms. It loses points for no web app or Windows version, but it makes up for it in pure good looks. Costing $9.99 / £8.99 / AU$14.99, the app oozes charm and fluidity and is very rigidly based on the GTD (Get Things Done) methodology.

This app has won two Apple Design Awards in the past, but it’s more than just a well-designed to-do list. Things 3 includes unparalleled keyboard shortcut support, keyboard navigation, calendar integration, and some very nice widgets. It also has one of the best Apple Watch apps in the business.

With Things 3 you can, as you would imagine, add standalone tasks one at a time, but a big strength for the app is the ability to quickly convert a single to-do item into a project. You can then fill it with subtasks and more detail about the project itself. Things 3 is an app you should turn to when a simple ‘one item at a time' to-do system just won’t do.

There are some downsides to Things 3 to consider. The main sticking point is the relatively expensive upfront cost and the fact that you have to buy it separately for every device you want it on. A lack of Windows or web support may also put people off, but if you want a great-looking app with a lot of muscle under the hood then look no further.

OmniFocus 3

OmniFocus 3 in iOS 15

Some may describe Things 3 as form over function. OmniFocus 3, on the other hand, may tip the balance the other way. That’s not to say OmniFocus isn’t decent looking, in its own special way, but it certainly lets its functionality do the talking.

Of all the apps or services listed here, OmniFocus is the most advanced, with a focus on power users and those with large projects to manage. While it’s perfectly usable by anyone, you’re unlikely to get the most out of it unless you have a lot on your plate.

Available as a subscription of $9.99 / £9.49 / AU$15.99 a month, its emphasis is on creating and managing larger projects where you can tag your tasks with places, people, or priorities. By tagging tasks as much as possible, OmniFocus encourages you to manage tasks through what it calls ‘perspectives’. So, for example, if you have a work project with Bob from Accounts, you could filter down to all tasks tagged with ‘work’ and ‘Bob’ and work through all relevant tasks.

To get the most out of OmniFocus you would need to live a very busy and organized life. If this doesn’t apply to you, the app may be overkill. If it does apply to you, however, this is a powerful and flexible app that would help you de-stress, focus, and get things done.
