Google unveiled Android 12 (Go edition) on Tuesday as the new, toned-down version of Android 12, which it rolled out a few weeks back. Android 12 (Go edition) is the successor to Android 11 (Go edition) and is aimed at low-cost phones that run modest hardware. Google said that the new version in the Go edition series of Android software is faster, smarter, and more privacy-friendly.
Since the Go edition versions are toned-down severely, there are tradeoffs in them in favour of usability, such as poor animations and lack of features. But Google is addressing them with Android 12 (Go edition).
It said the phones running the Android 12 (Go edition) will launch apps 30 per cent faster as compared to previous Go edition versions. This means that your apps will open much faster, reducing your time when you look at the screen going black or the UI simply getting frozen.
And opening apps will now show smoother animations. Animations are important for a good software experience, which is why Google is including the SplashScreen API, which will let users see a beautiful animation on the screen as the app loads, instead of simply nothing.
By smarter, Google means that the software will be able to now hibernate apps that have not been used for an extended period. This will improve the phone’s battery life and save space on the phone. Whenever the software tries to hibernate apps, it will notify the user about the activity.
The "Recent" menu, which can be navigated by tapping the menu button on the phone, will now let users translate what is on screen. This is going to be useful when you are reading something in a language you do not understand and with just a few taps on the phone, you will be able to translate that content into your preferred language. Google said it will improve the user experience, but, interestingly, the regular, non-Go edition Android versions lack this feature.
The regular version of Android has Nearby Share as the most useful tool that lets Android phone users share apps with each other. That feature is coming to the latest Go edition software. Users of Android 12 (Go edition) will be able to share apps with other users of the software. Additionally, lock screen profiles have been added for easy switching between different phone profiles.
The Files Go apps will let you recover files within 30 days of deleting them, so if you have any doubts about a photo or a file, you can bring it back to your regular library and get rid of the rest to save space on your phone.
In terms of privacy, Google's new Go edition software brings a Privacy Dashboard, which will show what apps have accessed what sensitive data, such as the location, sound from the microphone, and content from the camera, among others. Much like the regular Android versions, the Android 12 (Go edition) will show an indicator on the top whenever an app accesses the microphone or the camera of the phone. Users will also be able to turn their approximate location on or off for when an app wants the location data.
When are Android 12 (Go edition) phones coming?
Google said that Android 12 (Go edition) phones will arrive in 2022, but specific timelines are not available. That is because it will be the smartphone brands that will use the new software in their entry-level phones. And these phones attract a good number of customers. According to Google, there are now more than 200 million users of Android Go edition phones globally.
