iPhone 13 is going out for cheap ahead of iPhone 14 launch but is it worth buying now - India Today
Apple is only a couple of days away from its next generation iPhone series the iPhone 14. While the unofficial details about the iPhone 14 series have been doing the rounds for quite some time now, the final details will only be revealed once Apple makes the phones official in the market. Interestingly, as we approach the iPhone 14 launch day, the retail stores as well as the e-commerce websites are offering huge discounts on the existing iPhone 13 series to attract the buyers. The deals on the iPhone 13 are compelling buyers to ask a tricky question Should we buy the iPhone 13 or wait for the iPhone 14?
Things you should keep in mind before buying iPhone 14
There are a couple of things that are completely subjective as far as the iPhone 14 is concerned. The first thing that you should consider is your budget. Considering the iPhone 14 series will be the newest in the line-up, it will come with upgraded specifications, an advanced chipset and some tweaks are expected in the design language too. So all these upgrades put together would cost you a lot of money. No iPhone comes cheap, so the iPhone 14 won’t either.
As per reports, the iPhone 14 is expected to carry the same price tag as the iPhone 13, which is Rs 79,900. However, if you are eyeing the pro variants, you may have to shell out a lot of money. If budget is not a constraint for you, you should wait for the iPhone 14, no matter how juicy a deal you get on the iPhone 13. You may exchange your old phone and get some discounts on the iPhone 14. The upcoming smartphone is expected to feature an A16 bionic chipset, which will undoubtedly be the most powerful chipset available in a smartphone. Currently, the A15 chipset is touted as the most powerful processor.
Another factor that you should know before spending on the iPhone 14 is that there will be no offers or deals on the iPhone 14 for at least three or four months after it is launched. You may have to wait for the Amazon or Flipkart festive sales to get some discounts on the newest iPhone 14 series.
The iPhone 14 may get noticeable upgrades in terms of processor, camera or charging technology, but the design language is expected to remain the same as the iPhone 12. That said, Apple may move the notch but that’s the only major change you can expect. The Cupertino-giant will stick to its tried and tested design language.
Should you consider buying the iPhone 13 then?
For now, we are completely oblivious to the price of the iPhone 14 series, but we are well aware of all the deals and discounts that are available on the iPhone 13. The phone which was launched for Rs 79,900 for the 128GB variant is now selling at Rs 65,900 on Flipkart. Buyers can further bring the price down by selling their old phone and getting up to Rs 19,000 in return. Similarly, Amazon and Croma are also selling the device at discounted rates.
iPhone 13 is still the most powerful device you can own right now. It is powered by the A15 Bionic chipset, and features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a resolution of 2532×1170 pixels and a pixel density of 460ppi.
In terms of optics, the iPhone 13 features a dual-camera setup on the rear which includes a 12MP-primary camera along with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens. On the front, there is a 12-megapixel lens for selfies and video calls. Although Apple doesn't reveal the battery specs of the iPhones, the iPhone 13 is believed to house a 3240mAh battery that comes with support for up to 20W fast charging.
If you have an old iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, you can even get the iPhone 13 for around Rs 50,000, which is very good value for a powerful phone like the iPhone 13.

This sneaky malware hides on your PC for a month before going to work - ZDNet
Crypto-mining malware is being hidden in fake versions of popular software distributed via free download sites and is avoiding detection by waiting for a month before it runs in a campaign that has infected Windows PCs around the world.
Dubbed Nitrokod, the malware campaign has been active since at least 2019 and has been detailed by cybersecurity researchers at Check Point.
Crypto miners – also known as cryptojackers – are a form of malware that secretly exploit the computing power of infected devices to mine for cryptocurrency.
The process often goes undetected and the victim of the attack doesn't receive the cryptocurrency, which is sent to the malware operator, who is likely using a large network of infected devices to generate as much cryptocurrency as possible, without the cost of using their own computing power or electricity.
SEE: A winning strategy for cybersecurity (ZDNET special report)
Nitrokod is distributed via free software download sites that researchers say can be found easily using search engines. The software downloads claim to be desktop versions of popular web applications even though they don't actually have desktop versions.
"The malware is dropped from applications that are popular, but don't have an actual desktop version such as Google Translate, keeping the malware versions in demand and exclusive," Check Point said.
But anyone who downloads these trojan applications will unwittingly find themselves infected with crypto-mining malware – but not for a month after the first download, due to a multi-stage process that delays the infection process to help ensure the attack isn't discovered.
The infection process begins when the application is downloaded via a web installer, which in turn downloads and runs a .exe installer that is used to maintain persistence on the infected machine, as well as sending information about it back to the attacker.
Five days after this, the next stage of the process delivers a dropper that monitors when the machine is restarted and, after the fourth instance, extracts another installer from an encrypted RAR file. Taking this multi-stage approach helps the malware avoid being detected in a sandbox set up by security researchers.
SEE: These are the biggest cybersecurity threats. Make sure you aren't ignoring them
At this point, evidence of the previous stages are removed from log files to avoid the installation being tracked and a scheduled task is set up to trigger after 15 days.
At that point, another encrypted RAR file is downloaded that delivers another dropper, which in turn delivers another dropper from an encrypted file and executes it – installing the crypto miner on the infected PC, a month after the initial software download.
According to Check Point, the campaign stayed hidden under the radar for years and victims around the world have inadvertently infected their machines with malware.
"What's most interesting to me is the fact that the malicious software is so popular, yet went under the radar for so long," said Maya Horowitz, VP of research at Check Point Software.
Anyone who has downloaded the applications is urged to uninstall them and remove the malicious files. To avoid falling victim to this and other trojanised software downloads, it's recommended that users only download legitimate software from trusted websites.
While cryptojackers are arguably among the least damaging forms of malware, falling victim should still be considered a risk – particularly as the same methods used to install it could be exploited to install other, more damaging forms of malware, including ransomware and password-stealing trojans.
"Currently, the threat we identified was unknowingly installing a cryptocurrency miner, which steals computer resources and leverages them for the attacker to monetize on," said Horowitz.
"Using the same attack flow, the attacker can easily choose to alter the final payload of the attack, changing it from a crypto miner to, say, ransomware or banking Trojan," she added.

More evidence surfaces that the iPhone 14 Pro duo will support 30W chargers - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com
Back in March analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple will introduce a 30W GaN charger this year. Now leakster DuanRui reports that an unnamed brand is sending out new 30W chargers to media outlets for testing with the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro series.
Another leakster, Kioriku, reports that the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will only charge at 30W near 0% and before dropping down to 27-25W (that’s how a typical charge curve works). The current iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max charge at 23W and 27W, respectively, so this will be a fairly small bump, unless Apple goes for a more aggressive charge curve (doubtful).
Apple already sells several GaN chargers, including the 140W power brick for the new 16” MacBook Pros and the 35W dual chargers that launched alongside the new M2 MacBook Air. However, those use USB C-to-C cables, while the iPhone 14 generation will stick to Lighting (the last generation to do so, according to Kuo, due to new EU regulations).
Apple's old (non-GaN) 30W charger • The new 35W dual USB-C GaN chargers
Also, we’re not holding out hope that Apple’s 30W GaN charger will be included with the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max phones, it will almost certainly be a separate purchase. As for the third-party charger, it will come with a USB-C to Lighting cable.

Instagram refutes claims that users location is shared with followers - ANI News
Washington [US], August 27 (ANI): Photo and video sharing platform Instagram's CEO Adam Mosseri and its social media team have refuted claims that their app is tracking location data and sharing it with followers looking for your exact location.
According to GSM Arena, a viral post claimed "a recent iOS update" has made it so that "people can now find your exact location from Instagram". This prompted several people to go into their phone's Instagram app settings and disable location permissions for the app.
Instagram's Comms Twitter posted about the viral post, clarifying what Instagram's policies on location data are. They wrote, "People can manage Location Services via their device settings, and tag locations on their posts if they want to share that information."
In another tweet, they added, "To be clear, we don't share your location with others. Similar to other social media companies, we use a precise location for things like location tags and maps features."
Apart from that Mosseri explained that Instagram device location powers location tag features but the app won't a user's location with other people.
A viral Instagram post isn't always the best place to find reliable information, a verification of that information is vital. The original post never mentioned whether such a location feature was Instagram's doing, instead it refers to "a recent iOS update" with no basis, as per GSM Arena. (ANI)

Sony increases PS5 price in select countries amid high inflation rates - Business Standard
Japanese tech giant Sony on Thursday said that it is increasing the price of Play Station 5 (PS5) in select markets due to the global economic environment, including high inflation rates.
The new recommended retail price (RRP) is coming in select markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada.

We're seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries," Jim Ryan, President and CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in a blogpost.
"Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5a" Ryan added. The company mentioned that there will be no price increase in the US.

Fitbit launches Sense 2, Versa 4, and Inspire 3 wearables - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com
Today Fitbit has officially introduced its "fall lineup", refreshing its two most high-end smartwatches alongside the Inspire 3 fitness tracker. The Google-owned company chose to subtly evolve the designs of the Versa 4 and Sense 2, opting to eschew any revolutionary changes this year in that department. Well, unless you count the physical button replacing the capacitive one from last year.
The theme pretty much continues on the inside as well. Compared to its predecessor, the Sense 2 gets all-day stress management thanks to its new continuous EDA sensor. This can make you aware of potential stress triggers and create a stress management routine that builds resilience over time. Alongside the Versa 4, it has 40 exercise modes (double the previous number), GPS, and more than 1,000 workouts and mindfulness sessions hidden behind the Fitbit Premium paywall. That also provides you with the most detailed sleep tracking, and the Daily Readiness Score which lets you know "when to push hard or take a rest day", and it looks like Fitbit has no plans to scrap the paid subscription.
None of these devices runs Wear OS, since they were probably already in development when Google's acquisition of Fitbit happened. However, Google is promising that its Maps and Wallet apps are going to be available soon on the Versa 4 and Sense 2.
These two also have 24/7 heart rate monitoring, real time stats, and "more than six days of battery life". Through fast charging, 12 minutes results in one day of juice.
The Inspire 3 is the latest iteration of Fitbit's entry-level tracker, and it logs activities, heart rate, calories, distance, sleep and stress in a redesigned thin, light, and now vibrantly colorful package. It can last up to 10 days on a charge depending on your usage, and 3 or more days with the always-on display function.
The Versa 4 is priced at $229.95, the Sense 2 at $299.95, and the Inspire 3 at $99.95. In all cases you get a six-month auto-renewing Premium membership for free. All three models are now up for pre-order at fitbit.com and "select global retailers". The Inspire 3 will become available in September, while the other two are coming "this fall".

Xiaomi's Redmi unveiled the Redmi Note 11SE in May in China, which is powered by the Dimensity 700 SoC, sports a 90Hz LCD, and features a 48MP primary camera. Today, the company announced a new Redmi Note 11SE in India with a different design and specs.

The new Redmi Note 11SE is powered by the Helio G95 chip, runs Android 11-based MIUI 12.5 out of the box (meh), and comes in three memory configurations - 6GB/64GB, 6GB/128GB, and 8GB/128GB. The smartphone's built around a 6.43" FullHD+ 60Hz AMOLED screen and packs a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W charging support.
For photography, you get a 13MP selfie camera on the front, with the quad camera setup on the rear comprising 64MP primary, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth sensor units.
The rest of the new Redmi Note 11SE's highlights include a USB-C port, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and an IR blaster. The smartphone is IP53 rated and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers, and Hi-Res Audio certification. It also has an NFC chip onboard.
If all this sounds familiar, that's because the new Redmi Note 11SE is just a rebadged Redmi Note 10S launched in India last May with NFC. Funnily enough, the company has even reused the graphics and marketing material from the Redmi Note 10S' product page.
It's unclear what was Xiaomi's rationale behind re-launching a year-old smartphone in India since the Redmi Note 10S is still being sold through its official website and the Note 11SE will also be sold through online channels. Then again, we are used to the Xiaomi group's love for rebranding smartphones and confusing naming conventions, so no surprises here.
Anyway, the new Redmi Note 11SE will go on sale in India starting August 31 through Mi.com and Flipkart with four color options - Thunder Purple, Cosmic White, Shadow Black, and Bifrost Blue. Its pricing will be revealed on August 26.

One of the most innovative features coming to the Sony PlayStation VR2 is the See-Through View. As mentioned by the company in its blog post, users will be able to see their surroundings while wearing the headset. Users can press the function button on the headset to toggle the See-Through View on or off.
PlayStation VR2 broadcast mode
Further, users can customise their play area with the help of the PS VR2 controllers and embedded cameras. To enable this feature, the cameras scan the room and the PS VR2 Sense controllers allow users to expand and set the play area. Lamborghini Urus Performante debuts with more power and lesser weight - CarWale
- The Lamborghini Urus Performante is the mid-life update for the SUV
- The model is expected to be launched in India in the coming months
Lamborghini has pulled the covers off the Urus Performante, which is essentially a mid-life update or facelift, if you may. That said, it's not just the face or the exterior design that has changed, there are considerable updates to the brand’s bestseller model.
In terms of cosmetic changes, the 2022 Lamborghini Urus Performante gets a revised front bumper, a blacked-out air dam, carbon-fibre front splitter, and a ventilated carbon-fibre hood. The latter can even be customized with visible carbon-fibre or a painted panel. Towards the rear, the SUV gets a new spoiler for better downforce, which the marquee claims is improved by 38 per cent, taking the overall downforce of the vehicle to an increase of eight per cent. Also on offer is a carbon-fibre rear diffuser, a carbon-fibre rear bumper, new air curtains, and carbon-fibre wheel arches.
Courtesy of the extensive use of carbon-fibre, the Lamborghini Urus Performante tips the scales at 47kg lesser than the outgoing version. A few other notable changes include an Akrapovic exhaust system that is now standard, a retuned steering system, a new ‘Rally’ drive mode, and new steel springs that lower the car by 20mm. Speaking of dimensions, the track too has witnessed an increase of 16mm. The 22-inch wheels with a new design and titanium bolts are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tyres.
Inside, changes to the new Lamborghini Urus Performante are limited to a new hexagon-shaped stitching for the seats, revised graphics for the screens, an optional Dark package (matte black treatment for various panels), and limitless customisations via the Ad Personam program.
Under the hood, the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 of the upcoming Lamborghini Urus Performante has been upgraded to produce 16bhp more, taking the figure from 650bhp to 666bhp. The torque output of 850Nm and the seven-speed automatic transmission remains unchanged. Just like it has been for all previous models, we expect Lamborghini to introduce the Urus Performante shortly after its official unveiling. Stay tuned.

iPhone 14 to AirPods Pro 2: What you should expect from Apple's September event - The Indian Express
Apple will be holding its traditional September event a few weeks from now. If the Cupertino-based tech giant follows past trends, we can expect it to unveil the next generation of iPhone to the star attraction during the event. While Apple is expected to unveil multiple devices at once, the iPhone 14 lineup and Apple Watch Series 8 are the most anticipated devices that could be launched. Here is what you can expect from the event.
iPhone 14 series
The iPhone 14 series is expected to be the main attraction at the rumoured September 7 Apple event. Apple is expected to introduce four new models this year. But according to rumours, for the first time, only the Pro models will get Apple’snext-generation A16 bionic chip, while regular variants will come with either the A15 chip (that featured in the iPhone 13) or a modified variant. Also, the iPhone mini is expected to be replaced by an iPhone max, which will have the same internals as the baseline iPhone with a larger screen and battery.
Apple might also keep the same camera array on the iPhone 14 series as was present in last year’s iPhone 14. This means that the cheaper iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max could come with two rear cameras with the Pro models getting three cameras and a LiDAR sensor. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that the Pro models will get a 48-megapixel sensor while the regular models will have a 12-megapixel sensor. This is in line with the trends where Apple reserves the big camera upgrades for its Pro models.
There were also a lot of rumours about price hikes for Apple’s iPhone 14 series, owing to rising inflation and manufacturing costs. It is likely that the iPhone 14 will start at $899 (approximately Rs 71,776) and the iPhone 14 Max will start at $999 (approximately Rs 79,665). The iPhone 14 Pro could start at $1,099 (approximately Rs 87,640) and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could start at $1,199 (approximately Rs 96,706). Of course, these prices are exclusive of local taxes and the iPhone 14 series could cost much more when it reaches our shores.

Apple Watch Series 8
There have been many rumours that Apple’s upcoming smartwatch could feature a new design language with squared-off edges like the company’s phones. But the latest leak suggests that the Apple Watch Series 8 will not stray far from the path set by Series 7. Twitter user ShrimpApplePro (@VNchocoTaco) shared an image of what is allegedly a leaked render of the next Apple Watch.
In a Twitter thread, the user said that not only will the next-generation Apple Watch come with the same design as its predecessor, but that it will also not come with any new sensors. The user also claimed that there will be no titanium variant of the watch and that instead, it will come in aluminium and stainless steel variants. The aluminium variant will come in midnight, starlight and Product (RED) colour options while the stainless steel variant will come in silver and graphite colours, according to the user. Do note that these rumours pertain to the base model Apple Watch and not the “Pro” model that Apple is expected to reveal.
AirPods Pro 2
Apple’s AirPods Pro was launched in 2019 and they are long overdue for an update. The new earbuds could make an appearance during the company’s September event. Bloomberg had previously reported that the AirPods Pro and an upgraded AirPods will launch in 2022. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the next-generation AirPods will also come with a Lightning connector.

According to reports, the AirPods Pro 2 could come with an upgraded H1 chip that with self-adaptive noise cancellation capabilities, better performance, and improved power consumption. It is also rumoured that the earbuds could come with heart-rate detection capabilities though it is unclear how Apple will implement this if the rumours are true.

Nothing Phone (1) Android 13 shouldn't be on your mind, says Carl Pei - BGR India
With Google’s announcement that Android 13 is ready for phones, different smartphone brands began telling their customers when they can expect the latest Android version. Nothing, a relatively new but impactful brand, however, doesn’t think you should be talking about Android version numbers. Carl Pei, the co-founder of Nothing and previously OnePlus, said a phone is more than that. Also Read - Nothing Phone (1) price hiked in India, company blames Dollar-Rupee fluctuation
In an interesting reply to a journalist who enquired about the Android 13 release for Nothing Phone (1) on Twitter, Pei said, “A product is more than just its specs, features, and version numbers.” Sure, what he said is true, but not very reassuring to the customers of Nothing Phone (1), especially when several software-related complaints related to the phone are piling up. A product is more than just its specs, features, and version numbers Also Read - Nothing Phone 1’s screen isn’t as bright as the company initially claimed: Report
— Carl Pei (@getpeid) August 17, 2022
To elaborate on what Pei said, the software is a crucial part of a phone but does not necessarily define if a “product” — Phone (1) in this case — is good or bad. How early a phone can receive the new software does not impact your experience unless there is a severe problem with the existing software that needs quick redressal. But it should matter for a brand that puts software as its primary selling point.
Software is important
Besides its cool looks, The Nothing Phone (1) has collected praises for clean software. Even though the software has some niggling issues here and there, the overall experience is not bad for users. So, if one could ignore that this is Nothing’s first phone and the related teething issues, the experience isn’t bad. And that makes the software all more important for the company.
Nothing’s website also says that the Phone (1) includes “only the best of Android” with a “perfected” experience. Sure, it does not say that that experience is an outcome of the latest software, but from a customer’s point of view, it should be. Pei has downplayed the race to get the latest Android version — maybe for all good reasons but at the wrong time.
Nothing has constantly been pushing software updates to Phone (1), so much so that it has begun to annoy some users. These updates iron out several bugs and fix some issues while adding new features. But there must be an end to this incessant software push and focus on what customers, who will now pay Rs 1,000 more, expect from Nothing — Android 13.

WhatsApp latest update: Meta-owned app releasing ability to allow undo message deletion to some iOS beta users - Times Now
WhatsApp icon
Photo : PTI
This update will allow users to restore a deleted message by clicking on "undo" if he/she deletes it by clicking on the option "delete for me" instead of "delete for everyone".
"when a message is deleted by using the option “delete for me”, a snackbar shows up by informing the user that the message has been deleted but it is possible to restore it by tapping “undo” so the fastest way to check if the feature is available for your account is to delete a message for you," WABetaInfo wrote.
Notably, if the snackbar disappears and a user does not use the undo feature, then he/she won’t be able to recover deleted messages later. Users can get the update by updating WhatsApp to the 22.18.0.70 beta available on TestFlight. The feature is released to only a few iOS beta testers. This feature will be available to more beta testers in the coming weeks.
Recently, WhatsApp released the ability to view status updates within the chat list. So far, the feature has been released to some beta testers.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra tipped to use a faster fingerprint reader with a larger scanning area - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com
Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 foldable phones, and the next high-end smartphones the Korean conglomerate will unveil are the Galaxy S23 devices, expected to arrive in January or February. The Galaxy S23 series will include an Ultra model, which, according to a new rumor, will feature Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Max fingerprint scanning sensor.
This is not a new sensor, though. We've already seen it on the iQOO 9 Pro and vivo X80 Pro, meaning the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will come with a faster fingerprint reader having a larger scanning area. We've used both the vivo X80 Pro and iQOO 9 Pro, and we were quite impressed with the accuracy and speed of the fingerprint scanner.
iQOO 9 ProThat said, it's unclear if Samsung will use this new fingerprint scanner on all the Galaxy S23 smartphones or if it will only be the Galaxy S23 Ultra that will get an upgrade. We'll hopefully find that out in the coming months.

Apple Loop: Apple Issues iPhone Warning, Disappointing iPhone 14 Price Rise, MacBook Air Competition - Forbes
Taking a look back at another week of news and headlines from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop includes Apple’s iPhone security warning, Apple’s launch event leaks, iPhone 14 price rises, another iPad delayed, Apple adds production in Vietnam, thoughts on the MacBook Air M2, Apple’s next USB-C move, and how could the iPod return?
Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the very many discussions that have happened around Apple over the last seven days (and you can read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes).
Massive iPhone Security Issues Confirmed
Apple has confirmed reports of two major iOS exploits that leave iPhones on older versions at risk of being attacked. To counter this, iOS 15.6.1 has been released, alongside a warning for users to update immediately to have these two security holes patched. Kate O’Flaherty reports:
"The first issue fixed in iOS 15.6.1 is a vulnerability in the iPhone Kernel tracked as CVE-2022-32894 that could allow an application to execute code with kernel privileges. “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited,” the iPhone maker says on its support page.
"The other issue patched in iOS 15.6.1 is a flaw in WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari, CVE-2022-32893, that could allow arbitrary code execution. Apple says it believes attackers have used it in real-life scenarios."
(Forbes).
iPhone Launch Day Leaks
We’re still awaiting confirmation from Apple itself, but reports have Tim Cook and his team taking to the Cupertino stage on September 7th to announce the iPhone 14 family. Looks like we’re getting news on the new iPhones a week earlier than usual. Let’s see what that does to the physical release and availability:
"Apple Inc. is aiming to hold a launch event on Sept. 7 to unveil the iPhone 14 line, according to people with knowledge of the matter, rolling out the latest version of a product that generates more than half its sales. The new iPhones will kick off a busy fall product season, which will also include multiple new Macs, low-end and high-end iPads, and three Apple Watch models."
(Bloomberg).
iPhone Price Rises Planned
Alongside details on an early release date, news on the potential pricing has gone in the other direction for the iPhone 14 family. Get ready for a price increase, especially on the Pro Max models:
"TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimates that the “iPhone 14 series ASP [average selling price] would increase by about 15% vs iPhone 13 series ASP.” Yes, 15% is significantly higher than previous price leaks, and it has set alarm bells ringing about a potential $1300 entry-level iPhone 14 Pro Max. But the full picture is a little more complicated."
(Forbes).
Power Problems To Delay iPad?
Apple is also expected to announce a new iPad at the same event, but questions on stock levels are already being asked due to manufacturing issues in China:
"Kuo said that the temporary power outage may affect iPad assembly facilities in Chengdu and Chongqing, operated by Foxconn and Compal. He added that it is "difficult to assess impacts on production currently," but its impact should be limited if the power outage can end on August 20. Flexible production scheduling could mitigate the effects of power outages, but it is not clear how iPad supplies may be hit if power does not return by August 20."
(Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumors).
Apple Brings Vietnam Further Into Production Chain
Staying in the production chain news chain, Apple is expanding its product line in Vietnam. Joining the iPad and AirPods manufacturing will be Apple Watch and MacBook. Not only should this help with spikes in demand, it also diversifies Apple’s risk across assembly plans and indeed across countries:
"Apple is in talks to make Apple Watches and MacBooks in Vietnam for the first time, marking a further win for the Southeast Asian country as the U.S. tech giant looks to diversify production away from China. Apple suppliers Luxshare Precision Industry and Foxconn have started test production of the Apple Watch in northern Vietnam with the aim of producing the device outside of China for the very first time, three people with direct knowledge of the matter told Nikkei Asia."
(Nikkei Asia).
Some MacBook Air M2 Thoughts
What if having the best ‘performance per dollar’ isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be? Mark Ellis reviews the MacBook Air M2 and, after careful consideration, decides that its just a bit too much for him:
“...the new design is a thing to behold. I absolutely love the mini MacBook Pro aesthetic, and it is easily the most satisfying laptop I’ve ever carried around. It gets better the longer you own it, too. Even the smudges on the Midnight version quickly turn into a non-event; they’re almost akin to a worn leather patina. The screen is a genuinely pleasant upgrade over the M1 version, too. That extra brightness has served me well over the last few weeks with the blistering sun creeping through every available window."
What’s Next For Apple?
Once more the subject of USB-C connectivity, or more specifically the universality of using USB-C and the potential it has to reduce e-waste is coming up in conversations around Apple products. The new entry-level iPad may not be ready to switch this year, but it’s coming:
"In addition to the new high-end iPad Pro, Apple is also planning to overhaul its most affordable iPad this year. The 10th generation iPad is expected to launch this fall and could be the biggest update to the entry-level iPad in years… The new iPad 10 is also rumored to switch to USB-C from Lightning for charging and data transfer. The form factor is also expected to be updated with flat edges similar to iPad Pro, iPad Pro, and iPad mini."
(9to5Mac).
And Finally...
Will the iPod return? Apple’s classic music player in the shape of an iPhone never quite had the cachet of its GSM-connecting sibling, but is there still a place for it? If it was to be revived, where would it go?
"One use case that seemed like enough reason to keep iPod touch around is the many merchants, corporations, and businesses that used the device as an RFID scanner and point-of-sale payment processor.
"Retailers including Apple's own store, process payments via a mobile device and card reader. All these uses can be done with an iPhone or iPod touch. If cellular is not needed, then a basic iPod touch would suit the need perfectly. It will be interesting to see what these businesses do when their iPod touches get old and they need to replace them all."
