Corning unveils Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with improved drop resistance - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

We don’t have to tell you that smartphones have gotten larger over the years. For a company like Corning that created a problem – the longer the screen diagonal is, the more stress will be put on the glass when you inevitably fumble your phone and drop it on the floor.

That means that it has to keep improving on its tough glass formulation to keep up with changes in smartphone design. A couple of years ago it introduced Victus, then came a plus version in 2021 and now it is time for the sequel, Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The smooth (possibly carpeted) floor of your home doesn’t present that much of a risk to a modern smartphone. Rough surfaces outside are another matter, though. Asphalt can leave the screen pretty scratched up if the glass isn’t tough enough, concrete is even worse.

That was Corning’s target with this generation of GG Victus – concrete. It’s a mix of cement, sand and rocks and one of those rocks can really ruin your day if you drop your phone. Concrete is rougher than asphalt, the company uses 80 grit sandpaper to approximate concrete compared to 180 grit for asphalt. The mix of the differently sized materials creates an uneven surface, so a piece of gravel sticking out slightly can concentrate all the force of the impact in one spot. Smooth floor tiles that you might have at home spread out the force, which really diminishes the chance of the glass shattering.

Using lab machinery to run tests, Corning developed Victus 2, which can survive one meter (hip height) drops onto concrete. If you happen to be walking on asphalt, the glass can survive drops from 2m (head height).

Using robots means that tests are accurate and easy to replicate (image credit: Corning) Using robots means that tests are accurate and easy to replicate (image credit: Corning)

As we said, larger phones are a problem. Not just because of the larger screen diagonal, phones have gotten heavier too – an average smartphone today is 10% larger and 15% heavier than one from four years ago, according to Corning. More weight equals more force when the phone hits the ground and that compounds the issue.

Surviving an impact without shattering isn’t enough, however, the glass has to also resist scratches. Those are two separate issues, though they sometimes have the same cause – dropping the phone onto a rough surface. That is not always the case, pockets and desks also carry a risk of scratches. Also, with the prevalent “glass sandwich” design, Gorilla Glass is often tasked with guarding not just the display on the front but also the back of the phone.

With Victus Corning believes it found a good balance between drop performance and scratch resistance. With Victus 2 drop performance on rough surfaces has been preserved while maintaining the scratch resistance.

Smartphones adorned with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 are expected to reach the market in the next few months. Which ones? Corning isn’t naming any names for now, but it maintains a list of devices that currently use GG – chances are that the sequels to the phones using Victus(+) will go up to version 2.

PS. We got to speak with Scott Forester, Division Vice President and Business Director, Glass & Operations Council at Corning, and asked about the challenges of building strengthened glass for smartphones. More on that coming in a separate article.

Samsung may release a Self Repair Assistant mobile app for DIYers - SamMobile - Samsung news

A new trademark application filed by Samsung may have revealed the company’s future plans related to its Self-Repair program. Judging by the filing, Samsung appears to be working on a new mobile app called “Self Repair Assistant.” The app’s icon, shown in the trademark application, consists of a stylized cogwheel and wrench on a blue background.

Samsung launched its Self-Repair program in the USA in the summer. The gist o the program is to allow Galaxy device users in the United States to acquire phone parts and tools for DIY repairs. Samsung introduced the Self-Repair program in partnership with iFixit, the latter of which supplies said components, tools, and instructions for disassembly and repairs.

Self Repair Assistant may be an app for DIY enthusiasts

The trademark filing describes “Self Repair Assistant” as a “computer application software for mobile phones for self-installation and self-maintenance of smartwatches, tablets, mobile phones, and earbuds.” It’s supposed to provide “consultancy and information services relating to self-installation and self-repair” of various mobile device types.

In other words, Samsung may be working on a mobile app that would allow Self-Repair customers to gain more information on how they should manage and repair their Samsung mobile devices. So, instead of going through the iFixit website, Samsung may offer guides and other helpful tidbits of information through a dedicated mobile app, i.e., Self Repair Assistant.

At launch, the Samsung Self-Repair program covered only a handful of devices, including the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy S21 trio, and the Galaxy Tab S7+. And not much has changed since. These remain the only devices covered by the program, so perhaps the dedicated Self Repair Assistant app could allow Samsung to expand on that list. Only time will tell, and of course, the presence of a trademark application doesn’t guarantee that the app will be released. Nevertheless, it might be the next logical step if Samsung intends to enrich this program and streamline the process for DIYers.

Apple announces the Oceanic+ app that makes the Apple Watch Ultra into a diving computer - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

The Apple Watch Ultra was unveiled last September as a highly durable and ruggedized Apple Watch. One of the first scenes shown during the livestream announcement was the Apple Watch Ultra as it was descending into water. The display showed ambient water temperature and the depth level in feet. Apple is announcing the Oceanic+ app for Watch Ultra which makes it a diving computer.

 Apple Source: Apple

Oceanic+ was designed by Huish Outdoors in collaboration with Apple and it lets the wearer access lots of relevant information for divers. The Apple Watch Ultra can be submerged to up to 40 m (130 ft) deep and uses its depth gauge and water temp sensors to collect additional data.

The app will show divers a warning if they are descending or ascending too quickly and it will show an estimated time it’d take to get back to the surface. The app will also let divers set compass heading during a dive. There is also a planner that takes tide, temperature, visibility, and currents into account before going on a dive. Watch face complications can show the wearer no-fly time, surface time, among others.

Oceanic+ will use the Taptic Engine and the Apple Watch Ultra’s big bright display to notify the diver of any crucial info during a diving session. While there is a limited free version of the app, you can fully unlock the app for $5/day, $10/month, or $80/year. A family license of the app can also be purchased for $130/year. Oceanic+ requires the Apple Watch Ultra running WatchOS 9.1 and paired with an iPhone 8 or newer on iOS 16.1

Gigabyte confirms GeForce RTX 4070 Ti & Radeon RX 7900 graphics cards - VideoCardz.com

Gigabyte confirms RTX 4070 Ti & Radeon RX 7900 lineup

Gigabyte becomes the first company to (inadvertently) confirm its upcoming high-end GPU lineup.

The company has submitted a GeForce RTX 4070 Ti based on NVIDIA GPU and Radeon RX 7900 XTX/XT GPUs featuring AMD Navi 31 RDNA3 processors. Both were submitted to Eurasian Economic Commission regulatory office. However, it should be noted that not all of those cards will be released. We usually see around 80% of those SKUs eventually reach the market, with some models being scrapped along the way. Nevertheless, this tells us the Gigabyte’s master plan or in this case, no plans for Radeon 7900 Master.

Radeon RX 7900 Series

Starting with Radeon RX 7900 series. The company submitted both the RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT GPUs, which are set to launch on the same day (December 13th). The list for both SKUs is almost as long as for the RTX 4070 Ti itself, which means that once again Gigabyte is not making a full-blown launch for Radeon GPUs. Instead, customers will get half-baked AORUS Elite/Gaming GPUs, instead of the premium Aorus Master/Xtreme/Aero/Eagle variants.

Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 Series, Source: EEC

However, it is now confirmed that Gigabyte will launch reference models (MBA – Made by AMD), which actually be the first to launch given the recent rumors.

  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XTX AORUS ELITE (GV-R79XTXAORUS E-24GD)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING OC (GV-R79XTXGAMING OC-24GD)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XTX GAMING (GV-R79XTXGAMING-24GD)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XTX Reference (GV-R79XTX-24GC-B)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XT GAMING OC (GV-R79XTGAMING OC-20GD)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XT GAMING (GV-R79XTGAMING-20GD)
  • Gigabyte Radeon RX 7900 XT Reference (GV-R79XT-20GC-B)

GeForce RTX 4070 Ti

Finally, we have a confirmation on RTX 4070 Ti. This card should be no secret to anyone, in fact, we know all the specs already. The RTX 4070 Ti is a rebranded GeForce RTX 4080 12GB, which was suddenly unlaunched by NVIDIA last month.

Gigabyte Geforce RTX 4070 Ti Series, Source: EEC

The company will once again try to launch the same card, but with a different, more appropriate name and hopefully better price. It is said that RTX 4070 Ti should appear early next year. The list features almost the entire Gigabyte lineup, with an exception to watercooled AORUS models.

  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti AORUS MASTER (GV-N407TAORUS M-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti AORUS ELITE (GV-N407TAORUS E-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC (GV-N407TGAMING OC-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti GAMING  (GV-N407TGAMING 12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti AERO OC (GV-N407TAERO OC-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti AERO (GV-N407TAERO-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti EAGLE OC (GV-N407TEAGLE OC-12GD)
  • Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Ti EAGLE (GV-N407TEAGLE-12GD)

It’s not a secret anymore that Xiaomi prepares to launch the Xiaomi 13 series. The new devices are close to their release and appeared on multiple certification bodies. Now, a new report suggests that the time of waiting is almost over. The Xiaomi 13 series will appear in China on December 1.

Xiaomi 13

According to YouTuber Sahil, the Xiaomi 13 series will launch on December 1. His report is quite interesting since he also suggests the launch in India on the same date. Xiaomi usually takes a few months to bring its flagships to other markets besides China. So, seeing it in China and in India at the same time will be quite a surprise. He also shared some images of the phone in Blue and Brown color finishes. The images confirm a triple rear camera setup and also the Leica branding. This partnership started with the Xiaomi 12S series and is alive for the Xiaomi 13.

Gizchina News of the week

Xiaomi 13

Besides Sahil, another Twitter user, Gadgets Turbo shared multiple color options for the phone. The images show a bunch of colors including White, Red, and Grey. It has been a while since the last release with so many color options. The Xiaomi 13 is gearing up to be a device for all tastes.

Xiaomi 13 alleged specs

According to Geekbench, the Xiaomi 13 boasts the model number 2211133C. The listing confirms the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 at the helm. The Xiaomi 13 will get variants with 8 GB and 12 GB of RAM. We are expecting storage to be up to 256 GB or even 512 GB. The benchmark website also confirms Android 13 straight out of the box. With this release, we may also see the first iteration of MIUI 14. According to the 3C website, the phone will launch with 67W fast charging. It’s not Xiaomi’s fastest standard available but still surpasses some flagship phones. The rumors also suggest a 50 MP camera for the phone which might be the IMX890. Besides the vanilla, the company will also introduce the 13 Pro with improved specs.

iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro users BEWARE! Photos, videos from STRANGERS now on your phone - HT Tech

Shockingly, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro and other iPhone owners who use iCloud for Windows app have been affected by a strange bug that is showing photos and videos of complete strangers on their phones.

Microsoft recently rolled out a new feature that connects your Apple iCloud account to Windows 11. It allows users to access several media files such as photos, videos, calendars, files, emails, and other data on a Windows laptop or PC. But it seems like Apple's iCloud for Windows feature has some serious bug problem that is making some users complain about corrupted videos and images from strangers appearing in Photo Libraries.

A MacRumors report mentioned that there are several complaints from iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro users who are facing complications with the synced data with iCloud. When it is running on Windows, these images from strangers are turning black with some scan lines while videos are unwatchable due to rendering. The most worrying part about it is that users are seeing photos and videos of strangers that do not belong to them and even more shockingly, their photos on iCloud may well be ending up on some strangers' iPhones too!

"iCloud for Windows is corrupting videos recorded from an iPhone 14 pro max resulting in black videos with scan lines. On rare occasions, it is inserting stills into videos from unknown sources, possibly other's iCloud accounts. I've been shown photos of other people's families I've never seen in my life, soccer games, and other random photos. Obviously, this is extremely concerning and does not exactly make me feel safe using iCloud," Macrumors quoted one of the affected Apple users.

Who is affected?

The issue is not reflected for everyone but for a few users. Though, the report says that Windows 11 and Windows 10 both appear to be impacted by this bug, there is a possibility that it may only be affecting devices with certain settings such as HDR and HEVC enabled.

Sadly, there is no other information available at the moment regarding this bug, and even the reasons remain unknown. But it is surely a matter of privacy and security for users who are receiving photos and videos of strangers as well as for those whose pictures are appearing in random photo libraries. Apple is aware of the problem, but so far, no reaction has been forthcoming.

Nothing Phone (1) gets one-tap Quick Settings toggles with Nothing OS 1.1.7 - The Indian Express

Nothing Phone (1): The Nothing Phone (1) recently got its 7th OTA update and while it doesn’t feature any major changes or an update to Android 13 just yet, there are some UI changes and general bug fixes. However, one of the new features is one addition Phone (1) users have been waiting for.

The update adds ‘one-tap’ functionality to the Nothing Phone (1)’s quick settings toggles for Bluetooth, Mobile Data, WiFi and Hotspot. With the change, users can now tap these toggles when fully expanded to turn the services on or off.

Previously, a tap on any of the the above-mentioned toggles would open a smaller window towards the bottom of the screen which again featured the same toggles. This added an extra, unnecessary step in the process of turning on your WiFi, turning off mobile data or switching on your Bluetooth connection.

Interestingly, this small but important change is not a part of the official changelog. There are also some other changes in Nothing OS 1.1.7.

These include Battery Percentage display support for Airpods, allowing Airpods users to see their battery percentage. The phone also gets the November Android security patch, fixes to the software for less stutters and more fluidity, as well as better audio quality while recording videos.

Nothing also mentions in the changelog that it has fixed an issue that caused WhatsApp notifications to be unresponsive on the lockscreen. The battery status will also now show more accurate numbers. Lastly, Nothing says that the update adjusts the thermal threshold to “better balance performance and temperature’.

The Nothing OS 1.1.7 update will come to Phone (1) users as an OTA update. If you haven’t received it yet, you should soon since the update comes out in phases. Users can also manually look for the update by heading into Settings/ System Update.

Black Friday PC gaming peripherals deals - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

The last Friday of November is finally upon us, and with it, the traditional barrage of Black Friday deals. Naturally, our first and primary job around this time is to hunt down smartphone deals for you. However, we here at GSMArena tend to be general tech geeks with broad interests - cool PC peripherals being just one example.

Black Friday PC peripherals deals

Gaming keyboard deals

Without further ado, let's jump right into things with some deals on keyboards. Razer is offering quite a few of its keyboards on promo in the US. The BlackWidow V3 Mini is an excellent 10-keyless, 65% size keyboard with per-key RGB lighting, up to 200 hours of battery life and HyperSpeed wireless connection technology for low latency. It can be had with either clicky green or linear yellow mechanical switches.

Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini 65% Wireless Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Then there is the Razer Huntsman Mini - an even smaller 60%, 10-keyless wired board with per-key RGB and your choice of either clicky or linear optical switches. Its price is nicely slashed to $70 on Amazon US or EUR 70 on Amazon DE. The latter deal is for a black board with purple switches. Also, this is as good a place as any to note that most German keyboard listings, including this one, are for QWERTZ layout keyboards.

Razer Huntsman Mini 60% Gaming Keyboard

Up next, we found a couple of interesting deals from Corsair. There is the big-boy Corsair K100 full-sized keyboard, which is currently on sale in its optical-mechanical switch variant. It is a wired keyboard with 44 RGB zones, multimedia and additional programmable keys.

Corsair K100 RGB Optical-Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

The classic and famous Corsair K70 is also on sale. It is another full-sized board with optical-mechanical OPX linear switches and multimedia controls, plus plenty of RGB. It can be had for $120 or with linear Cherry MX Red switches in Germany for EUR 150.

Corsair K70 PRO Optical-Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Gaming mouse deals

Moving on to mice. The Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite has a nice price cut down to $50 in the US and EUR 63 in Germany. It is a professional gaming mouse with twelve whole programable buttons mounted on a slider on one side. It is great for MOBA and MMO games.

Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite Mouse

The Razer Naga Trinity offers even more flexibility with its programmable buttons. These are now mounted on interchangeable plates, so you can choose whether you want 2, 7 or 12 programmable buttons on your mouse at any time.

Razer Naga Trinity Gaming Mouse

The Razer Viper Ultimate is a much simpler mouse, but still wireless, with Hyperspeed technology, up to 70 hours of battery life and 8 programmable buttons.

Razer Viper Ultimate Wireless Gaming Mouse

The Razer Basilisk V3 might be wired, but it comes with a whole lot of RGB and a total of 11 programmable buttons.

Razer Basilisk V3 Gaming Mouse

The Razer Orochi V2 is technically a gaming mouse as well, but it is more geared towards mobile use than anything else. It is very light, offers up to 950 hours of battery life and has two modes of connection for extra flexibility - Razer HyperSpeed or Bluetooth. It is also very reasonably priced, currently going for $40 in the US and EUR 38 on Amazon DE.

Razer Orochi V2 Wireless Gaming Mouse

Last, but not least, an affordable option in the Razer DeathAdder V2. It's a trendy wired mouse with an ergonomic design and 8 programmable buttons.

Streaming webcam deals

Finally, we have a sort of "misc" category with a couple of deals on webcams. In keeping with the general "gaming" theme of the article and the products in it, these webcams are not just your average, run-of-the-mill cameras, but ones with pretty high quality, well-suited for streaming, as well as general use.

Black Friday PC peripherals deals

There is the Razer Kiyo Pro, which has a wide-angle lens with adjustable FOV and a maximum resolution of 1080p@60fps.

Razer Kiyo Pro Streaming Webcam

And there is also the Elgato Facecam. You might have heard of Elgato for its extensive product portfolio in the online streaming niche. The Elgato Facecam is perfectly suited for such purposes with 1080p@60fps quality.

Black Friday smartwatches and fitness trackers deals - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Amazon Black Friday is here, and if you’ve been eyeing a new smartwatch or fitness tracker, then it’s time to go over some deals. Here’s a list of smartwatch and smartband deals from across Amazon US, Amazon UK and Amazon DE.

Smartwatches

Kicking off the smartwatch list is Apple’s top dog – Apple Watch Ultra. Sure it costs a pretty penny/euro cent, but you are getting a proper rugged smartwatch with all the bells and whistles offered by Cupertino, and it’s a few bucks off from its usual price. Apple is not a fan of steep discounts.

Apple Watch Ultra

Next up is the Apple Watch Series 8 Aluminum starting at $449/£509/€569 for the 41mm version (GPS+cellular) while the 45mm is $479/£529/€609. Apple has refined its Watch Series for years, and the eighth iteration brings all the expected health and sports tracking features alongside the new temperature sensor, crash detection feature, and a low-power mode.

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS + Cellular
Apple Watch Series 8 GPS + Cellular

Next up is a Wear OS entry – the Pixel Watch from Google. This is one of the most elegant and unique smartwatches out there, and it definitely has that premium feel. We liked the snappy Wear OS 3.5 and improved fitness tracking via Google Fit, though, as all first-gen products, Pixel Watch falls short in some areas – especially battery life. Nevertheless, it makes for an excellent companion to any Android phone, especially if you’re a Pixel phone user.

Google Pixel Watch (Wi-Fi)

Samsung has a bunch of watches on offer and Galaxy Watch5 Pro is the latest and greatest one. The LTE-equipped model comes down to $429/£429/€392 depending on your market. You’ve got the full-fledged Wear OS 3.5 experience with the added overlay of One UI Watch on top. The build is top-of-the-line with Sapphire glass and a titanium casing, and there’s some advanced health tracking, including BMI readings and ECG monitoring.

The standard Galaxy Watch5 is another option to consider. It comes in 40mm and 44m sizes and runs the same Wear OS 3.5 with One UI Watch on top just like the Pro model though with less premium aluminum casings and watch bands as well as smaller batteries.

The older Watch4 generation is also on offer with the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic and Galaxy Watch4 models. Watch4 Classic has the fan-favorite rotating bezel while Watch4 is an excellent option at its reduced price-point with most of the health and fitness tracking features from the Watch5 series.

If the Pixel Watch is too small and you’re not a fan of Samsung’s One UI 4.5 there’s the Fossil Gen 6, which also boots Wear OS (the old version), though an update to Wear OS 3 is available. This is a solid-built, premium watch with a capable OS and all the health and activity tracking features you could ask for.
