Google’s AI model converts text to music - The Hindu

Google researchers have developed an AI tool, MusicLM, that can generate high-quality music from text descriptions.

(For insights on emerging themes at the intersection of technology, business and policy, subscribe to our tech newsletter Today’s Cache.)

MusicLM generates music at 24 kHz that remains consistent over several minutes. It outperforms previous systems both in audio quality and adherence to the text descriptions, Google claimed in a research paper on Thursday.

The model can even transform a whistled or hummed melody according to the style described in a text caption, Google added.

The tech company however does not have any plans to release the model right now as it acknowledged that there are several risks associated with the new model and the use-case it tackles.

“We strongly emphasize the need for more future work in tackling these risks associated to music generation — we have no plans to release models at this point,” Google said in the research.

The generated samples will reflect the biases present in the training data, raising the question about appropriateness for music generation for cultures underrepresented in the training data, while at the same time also raising concerns about cultural appropriation, Google noted.

The company’s future works may focus on lyrics generation, along with improvement of text conditioning and vocal quality, modeling of high-level song structure like introduction, verse, chorus, and modeling the music at a higher sample rate, according to the research paper.

WhatsApp working on message reactions within community announcement group - Business Standard

Meta-owned messaging platform is reportedly working on a new feature which will allow users to react to messages within the announcement group, on iOS.

The platform is working on an in-app banner to alert users when an update that brings reactions within the announcement group is available, reports WABetaInfo.

As a result, users will be needed to update the version of the application from the App Store or the TestFlight app to access this new feature.

The ability to react to messages within the community announcement group is currently under development and it is expected to be released in a future update of the iOS application, the report said.

Meanwhile, last week, it was reported that the messaging platform had rolled out some new shortcuts for group admins to quickly and easily perform actions for a certain group participant, on iOS.

The new update will help group admins to quickly manage and communicate with group participants in private, as now the platform supports large groups of up to 1024 participants.

The death of Moore's law, and why it's actually a good thing for games - TechRadar

Gordon Moore looked into his proverbial crystal ball one day in 1965 and authored one of the 20th century’s most defining principles. Observing the pace of innovation in computing for the magazine Electronics, he predicted that the number of transistors on a circuit would double each year from the present until 1975.

What he didn’t know at the time was that Moore’s law would continue to hold true for a bit longer than that. In the intervening decades, that pace of growth of the number of transistors per circuit continued to remain steady, utterly transforming the modern world in the process. This technological revolution has been responsible for about a third of all productivity-based growth in the United States since 1974, according to MIT Technology Review (opens in new tab). Moore supposed that it might lead to wonders like computers in our own homes, and here we are in 2022 trading NFTs on our smartphones. Dream bigger, Gordon. Jeez.

But nothing lasts forever. Not The Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak, not your friend’s conversation about their holiday, and, most pertinently, not Moore’s law. There wasn’t a particular moment when the graph suddenly flatlined after decades of upwards diagonal trajectory. Instead, it’s been a slow tapering off, an increasing struggle to achieve the next microscopic manufacturing process.

Age against the machine

Intel’s 10nm manufacturing process was severely delayed, arriving in 2019 with poor die yields and leading to a four-year generational gap between it and Intel’s previous 14nm chips. The company’s designers agree that their rate of progress is no longer consistent with Moore’s law. Nvidia has recently said the same.

We all need constraints, because limitless choice is paralysis. Neil Postman called it the information action ratio – the more we know, the less we do.

What’s more, it’s taking exponentially more effort to reach the next rung on the ladder. The amount of research and development required to bring about smaller, denser microchips has risen by a factor of 18 since 1971, say economists at Stanford and MIT.

Most computing experts are in agreement by now: Moore’s law is dead. And while that spells trouble for a western world that’s been largely driven by that innovation, with entire economies propped up on it, where we are now is a safe space. We’re only here to talk about games. Silly old games.

In this incredibly specific microcosm of society, the fall of Moore’s law is actually a good thing. That seems counter-intuitive at first, given that, as gamers, our initial reaction when we hear about a more powerful CPU or GPU is to imagine an outlandish degree of new graphical fidelity.

And particularly through the late ‘90s and noughties, the CPU arms race seemed to be generating massive steps forward for gaming. Not just better graphics, although that was certainly happening, but entirely new genres, made possible by complex AI, newfound environmental scale, and procedural generation.

But, since about 2008, the line’s been curving off. We didn’t notice an immediate effect in gaming. It’s happened so slowly that only now, more than a decade on, do we accept that games from 2012 don’t look that different to games from 2022. Particularly when you put games from 2012 next to games from 2002.

Having greater technological bandwidth at your disposal to make games is certainly a positive. But having a clear ceiling, albeit a little lower than you would have liked, is better.

Because creativity is all about constraints. In the writing world, you’d probably be looking at a blank page right now, just like I would have been the night before, if this commission asked me to write about whatever I liked. We all need constraints, because limitless choice is paralysis. Neil Postman called it the information action ratio – the more we know, the less we do.

In game development, the major constraints are budgetary – and that also covers time, since every day you’re still working on a game is another day you have to pay everyone – and technological.

We’ve become increasingly aware of the stresses and workloads involved with making games happen in recent years. But removing those aforementioned constraints wouldn’t alleviate that. Increasing them might.

Window of opportunity

Let’s take a classic example of development hell: Duke Nukem Forever. The project kicked off in 1997 and didn’t see the light of day until 2011, and at least part of the reason for that famously protracted dev time was that it kept missing its tech window – the period during which the visuals still looked competitively shiny, the mechanics were in line with what else was out there in the market, and culturally people were still into the idea of picking up a piece of feces. Unfortunately this piece was published by Gearbox Software and going for full price.

What if there had been no new game engine? What if the Build Engine was the be-all and end-all of technical wonderment? Duke Nukem Forever would probably have been out before ‘99. And it would, inarguably, have been a much better title.

Because its developer would have had to work within the lines. Find new ways to make sprites and corridors interesting, just a couple of years after the ideas they displayed in Duke Nukem 3D. Without new, 3D-rendered corridors and polygonal enemies to hide old ideas behind, they’d have to innovate on a creative level.

That’s exactly what we see in the current wave of retro shooters like Dusk, Ion Fury and Amid Evil. They download on Steam before you’ve had a chance to click ‘OK’, such is their tiny file size. Their visuals wouldn’t make the cover of a games mag in 2001. But they’re fantastic games, all of them, because of their level and enemy design, weapon feedback, and sense of atmosphere.

To broaden the idea out a bit, let’s look at consoles. The PlayStation 3 arrived with Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Need For Speed: Carbon, Madden NFL 07 et al. That same console’s lifespan ended in 2013 with The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, and GTA 5

The hardware ceiling was never raised. But developers were able to find efficiencies, smarter solutions to fundamental problems, and harness those same resources to produce games that looked easily a generation removed from the platform’s launch titles.

The less the goalposts move, the easier it becomes to score. Look through ‘Best games of 2021’ lists and you’ll find some gorgeous triple-A offerings like Forza Horizon 5 (which is nearly visually identical to its predecessor, incidentally), but also strange new concepts like Loop Hero, Unpacking, and Wildermyth. Their minimum specs are 2007-grade, but they’re full of new experiences and fresh angles.

So, while our global economy might be doomed by the decline of Moore’s law, itself the engine room for so much of our 20th and 21st century prosperity, we can at least, as we gather around the burning trashcans amidst the rubble of what were once cities, look forward to some really smart video games coming out.

Apple unveils new education, awareness efforts on Data Privacy Day - Investing.com India

New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Apple (NASDAQ:) on Tuesday unveiled a new set of educational resources designed to help users take control of their data, as Data Privacy Day approaches on January 28.

To drive awareness about the importance of data privacy, Apple has also partnered with Apple TV+ Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed in "A Day in the Life of an Average Person's Data."

"Privacy is built into all of Apple's products and services from the ground up, from the moment users open their devices to every time they use an app," according to the company.

Apple products and features include innovative privacy technologies designed to minimise how much user data anyone can access.

"This is why Safari throws trackers off the trail. It's why the Health app keeps user records under wraps, and why Siri learns what the user needs rather than who they are," said the tech giant.

These are just some of the dozens of privacy features that Apple has built into the foundation of every product and every service it creates.

Apple believes that every user should have clear insights into how their data is used, and tools to decide when to share their data and who to share it with.

The whimsical short film "A Day in the Life of an Average Person's Data" invites users to follow Apple TV+ Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed through his average day, explaining how bad actors misuse data — and how Apple works to keep his personal information safe.

The commitment to transparency and control -- and to privacy-protecting innovations across its technology -- gives Apple users more choice and more control over their personal information.

On Data Privacy Day and every day, teams across Apple are pushing this work forward, said the company.

Data Privacy Day is an international event that occurs every year on January 28.

NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti dominates weekly GPU sales at German retailer, more cards sold than RX7000 & Arc combined - VideoCardz.com

Last week NVIDIA sold more RTX 4070 Ti cards than all Radeon RX 7000 & Arc Alchemist combined

According to the most recent sales data from TechEpiphany, NVIDIA has sold over 500 units of GeForce RTX 4070 Ti graphics cards.

In the third week of January, NVIDIA sold 545 models of RTX 4070 Ti. This includes all variants sold by German retailer Mindfactory. This number is higher than both RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, which sold in 210 and 190 units respectively.

Such a number of RTX 4070 Ti cards sold in one week means that it outperformed the sales of Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT and Intel Arc A770/A380 combined. The latter is especially a poor sale right now with only 20 combined sales of Alchemist GPUs.

Sales of RX 7900 series are clearly lagging behind NVIDIA RTX 40 GPUs, with only 300 XTX cards and 200 XT models sold. However, the RX 7900 XTX which is advertised as a direct competitor to 4080 managed to sell in 110 units more, that’s despite much fewer custom designs currently available.

Furthermore, AMD sold 410 units of Radeon RX 6700 XT and NVIDIA RTX 3060 was even better sale with 485 units. This shows how important is the upper mid-range segment currently is, but neither AMD nor NVIDIA have made their next-gen plans for this segment official. The third competitor, Intel, has only sold 10 units of its Arc A770 offered in a similar price and performance segment.

The Oppo Reno8 T series we've been hearing about for over a week now is "coming soon." This revelation comes from Oppo's Indonesian branch, which also set up a promo page for the Reno8 T series on its official website, corroborating the lineup's previous design leaks and color options.

The Reno8 T series, touted as "The Portrait Expert," will have 4G and 5G models. The smartphones listed on Oppo's website and online store aren't explicitly mentioned as 4G or 5G versions. But rumors claim the black and orange-colored smartphones - having flat screens with punch holes in the top-left - are the Reno8 T 4G, meaning the smartphone with gradient design, curved display, and centered punch hole is likely the Reno8 T 5G.

Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for AI fight - Moneycontrol

Google parent company Alphabet announced that roughly 12,000 people will be laid-off.

Google parent company Alphabet announced that roughly 12,000 people will be laid-off.

Last month, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google’s founders, held several meetings with company executives. The topic: a rival’s new chatbot, a clever artificial intelligence product that looked as if it could be the first notable threat in decades to Google’s $149 billion search business.

Page and Brin, who had not spent much time at Google since they left their daily roles with the company in 2019, reviewed Google’s AI product strategy, according to two people with knowledge of the meetings who were not allowed to discuss them. They approved plans and pitched ideas to put more chatbot features into Google’s search engine. And they offered advice to company leaders, who have put AI front and center in their plans.

The re-engagement of Google’s founders, at the invitation of the company’s current CEO, Sundar Pichai, emphasized the urgency felt among many Google executives about AI and that chatbot, ChatGPT.

The bot, which was released by the small San Francisco company OpenAI two months ago, amazed users by simply explaining complex concepts and generating ideas from scratch. More important to Google, it looked as if it could offer a new way to search for information on the internet.

The new AI technology has shaken Google out of its routine. Pichai declared a “code red,” upending existing plans and jump-starting AI development. Google now intends to unveil more than 20 new products and demonstrate a version of its search engine with chatbot features this year, according to a slide presentation reviewed by The New York Times and two people with knowledge of the plans who were not authorized to discuss them.

At the same time, Alphabet is scaling back its workforce. On Friday, the company said it would cut about 12,000 jobs after a hiring spree during the pandemic and amid concerns of a slowing economy. The layoffs were designed “to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company,” Pichai wrote in a note to employees.

“This is a moment of significant vulnerability for Google,” said D. Sivakumar, a former Google research director who helped found a startup called Tonita, which makes search technology for e-commerce companies. “ChatGPT has put a stake in the ground, saying, ‘Here’s what a compelling new search experience could look like.’” Sivakumar added that Google had overcome previous challenges and could deploy its arsenal of AI to stay competitive.

Since stepping back from day-to-day duties, Page and Brin have taken a laissez-faire approach to Google, two people familiar with the matter said. They have let Pichai run the company and its parent company, Alphabet, while they have pursued other projects, such as flying-car startups and disaster-relief efforts.

Their visits to the company’s Silicon Valley offices in the past few years have mostly been to check in on the so-called moonshot projects that Alphabet calls “Other Bets,” one person said. Until recently, they have not been very involved with the search engine.

But they have long been keen on bringing AI into Google’s products. Vic Gundotra, a former senior vice president at Google, recounted that he gave Page a demonstration of a new Gmail feature around 2008. But Page was unimpressed by the effort, asking, “Why can’t it automatically write that email for you?” In 2014, Google also acquired DeepMind, a leading AI research lab based in London.

Google’s Advanced Technology Review Council, a panel of executives that includes Jeff Dean, the company’s senior vice president of research and artificial intelligence, and Kent Walker, Google’s president of global affairs and chief legal officer, met less than two weeks after ChatGPT debuted to discuss their company’s initiatives, according to the slide presentation.

They reviewed plans for products that were expected to debut at Google’s company conference in May, including Image Generation Studio, which creates and edits images, and a third version of AI Test Kitchen, an experimental app for testing product prototypes.

Other image and video projects in the works included a feature called Shopping Try-on, a YouTube green-screen feature to create backgrounds; a wallpaper maker for the Pixel smartphone; an application called Maya that visualizes 3D shoes; and a tool that could summarize videos by generating a new one, according to the slides.

Google has a list of AI programs it plans to offer software developers and other companies, including image-creation technology, which could bolster revenue to Google’s Cloud division. There are also tools to help other businesses create their own AI prototypes in internet browsers, called MakerSuite, which will have two “Pro” versions, according to the presentation.

In May, Google also expects to announce a tool to make it easier to build apps for Android smartphones, called Colab + Android Studio, that will generate, complete and fix code, according to the presentation. Another code generation and completion tool, called PaLM-Coder 2, has also been in the works.

Google executives hope to reassert their company’s status as a pioneer of AI. The company aggressively worked on AI over the past decade and already has offered to a small number of people a chatbot that could rival ChatGPT, called LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications.

“We continue to test our AI technology internally to make sure it’s helpful and safe, and we look forward to sharing more experiences externally soon,” Lily Lin, a spokesperson for Google, said in a statement. She added that AI would benefit individuals, businesses and communities and that Google is considering the broader societal effects of the technology.

Google, OpenAI and others develop their AI with so-called large language models that rely on online information, so they can sometimes share false statements and show racist, sexist and other biased attitudes.

That had been enough to make companies cautious about offering the technology to the public. But several new companies, including You.com and Perplexity.ai, are already offering online search engines that let you ask questions through an online chatbot, much like ChatGPT. Microsoft is also working on a new version of its Bing search engine that would include similar technology, according to a report from The Information.

Pichai has tried to accelerate product approval reviews, according to the presentation reviewed by the Times. The company established a fast-track review process called the “Green Lane” initiative, pushing groups of employees who try to ensure that technology is fair and ethical to more quickly approve its upcoming AI technology.

The company will also find ways for teams developing AI to conduct their own reviews, and it will “recalibrate” the level of risk it is willing to take when releasing the technology, according to the presentation.

The consequences of Google’s more streamlined approach are not yet clear. Its technology has lagged OpenAI’s self-reported metrics when it comes to identifying content that is hateful, toxic, sexual or violent, according to an analysis that Google compiled. In each category, OpenAI bested Google tools, which also fell short of human accuracy in assessing content.

Google listed copyright, privacy and antitrust as the primary risks of the technology in the slide presentation. It said that actions, such as filtering answers to weed out copyrighted material and stopping AI from sharing personally identifiable information, are needed to reduce those risks.

For the chatbot search demonstration that Google plans for this year, getting facts right, ensuring safety and getting rid of misinformation are priorities. For other upcoming services and products, the company has a lower bar and will try to curb issues relating to hate and toxicity, danger and misinformation rather than preventing them, according to the presentation.

The company intends, for example, to block certain words to avoid hate speech and will try to minimize other potential issues.

Google expects governments to scrutinize its AI products for signs of these issues. The company has recently been the subject of numerous government inquiries and lawsuits accusing it of anti-competitive business practices. It anticipates, according to the presentation, “increased pressure on Al regulatory efforts because of rising concerns about misinformation, harmful content, bias, copyright.”

IIT Madras develops mobile operating system, BharOS: 5 things you should know - India Today

The developers are claiming that the BharOS has been designed to provide a more secure experience to users. Here are five things that one should know about India’s very own operating system.

IIT Madras develops a mobile operating system, BharOS.

By Ankita Garg: An IIT Madras (IIT Madras)-incubated firm has developed a mobile operating system with the help of JandK Operations Private Limited to boost Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India “Atmanirbhar.” The developers have named it 'BharOS,’ and announced that this OS can benefit the country's 100 crore mobile phone users.

This software can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. The developers are claiming that the OS has been designed to provide a more secure experience to users. Here are five things that one should know about India’s very own operating system.

IIT Madras develops mobile OS, BharOS: 5 things you should know

- BharOS is a mobile operating system, which the developers explain is focused on “providing users more freedom, control, and flexibility to choose and use only the apps that fit their needs. This innovative system promises to revolutionize the way users think about security and privacy on their mobile devices."

-The good thing about this mobile operating system is that this one comes with No Default Apps (NDA). This basically means that users will get most of storage space, unlike Android. The OEMs ship phones with default Google apps as well as some native apps. With BharOS, one won’t be forced to use apps that they may not be familiar with or that they may not trust.

-One will also be able to receive 'Native Over The Air' (NOTA) updates, similar to Android phones. The developers assert that NOTA updates are automatically downloaded and installed on the device, so users don’t need to manually initiate the process.

-Furthermore, the OS will also offer access to trusted apps from organization-specific Private App Store Services (PASS). “A PASS provides access to a curated list of apps that have been thoroughly vetted and have met certain security and privacy standards of organizations. This means users can be confident that the apps they are installing are safe to use and have been checked for any potential security vulnerabilities or privacy concerns,” the developers said.

- However, BharOS is currently being provided to only those organizations that have stringent privacy and security requirements “whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles.”

What is missing?

While the new mobile operating system looks good, there are no details on what all features it provides to users to make it easier to use the device in their day-to-day life. Android, for instance, offers personalization options, privacy features, battery analysis, home screen widgets, notification settings, and more. We will get more clarity on this when it is available for everyone. The developers have made it clear in the announcement that OS will remain limited to specific organizations.

OnePlus 11 US Variant Could Charge Slower Than Global Model - Greenbot

OnePlus 11 US Variant Could Charge Slower Than the Global Model

BY Ronil

Published 20 Jan 2023

OnePlus 11

A new OnePlus 11 leak suggests that the US variant could come with an 80W charger. This revelation comes from reliable leaker Max Jambor on Twitter. According to the tipster, there will be two OnePlus 11 global variants: one with an 80W charger for the US and the other with a 100W charger for the international market.

The difference between an 80W charger and a 100W charger is negligible and might not be a deal-breaker for anyone. This 20W shouldn’t make a massive difference in charging time, so this might not be a vast downgrade for buyers in the US.

This won’t be the first time OnePlus shipped a different charging speed globally versus the US. The company offered an 80W charger with OnePlus 10 Pro, but the US model came with a 65W charger. Similarly, the OnePlus 10T had a 150W charger in the box globally, but the US model topped out at 125W.

Despite the slower 80W charging speed, the OnePlus 11 will still come loaded with a flagship hardware configuration. It will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and offer up to 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. Powering the smartphone will be a 5,000mAh battery. It will flaunt a large 6.7-inch 120Hz 2K AMOLED panel with a punch-hole cutout for a 50MP front-facing snapper.

Furthermore, there will be a triple rear camera setup, a 50MP primary shooter, a 48MP ultrawide lens, and a 32MP telephoto camera. It will run on Android 13-based Oxygen OS out of the box.

OnePlus will launch the smartphone for the global market on February 7. The company will ship the device in two colorways: Titan Black and Eternal Green. We will have to wait until the launch event to learn about the OnePlus 11’s availability and pricing details.

Instagram’s new Quiet Mode will prevent your followers from sending DMs, here’s how - India Today

Want to focus on studying or want a break from social media but getting distracted from Instagram notifications and DMs? The new Quiet Mode feature will allow you to take a break from social media peacefully.

By Divya Bhati: Want to sleep or take a break from social media but the notifications tempt you to check the apps again and again? Not anymore, as Meta has released a new feature for its Instagram users which will allow them to temporarily silence push notifications during their break time. Not only that, but the new feature will also send an auto-reply to your Instagram followers informing them not to message you so that you can focus on your meditation, driving, studying or just during your little break from the digital world.

Launching the Quiet Mode on Instagram, Meta says it wants to help people focus and to encourage people to set boundaries with their friends and followers. The feature will allow Instagram users to manage their time and focus and limit their social media activity.

How will the Quiet mode on Instagram work

Detailing the new feature, Meta further explains that once enabled on Instagram, the Quiet mode will turn off app notifications and will also send an auto-reply to followers when someone send a direct message (DM). " The feature, called Quiet Mode, will send automatic replies to users who try to message you on the platform, letting them know you weren't notified," says Meta in its blog post.

Once the user is back from the break time and starts using the app again, Instagram will show a quick summary of notifications which they missed during the interval, helping users to catch up with anything important.

Additionally, Instagram will also allow users to customise their Quiet mode hours according to their schedule. Just like Quiet mode on Facebook, Instagram users will also be able to schedule specific times when the feature will automatically be turned on.

How to turn on Quiet Mode in Instagram

To turn on quiet mode go to Instagram Settings> Notifications> Quiet Mode.

This new feature will focus more on teen users and will notify them to turn on the Quiet Mode "when they spend a specific amount of time on Instagram late at night." "Teens have told us that they sometimes want to take time for themselves and might be looking for more ways to focus at night, while studying and during school," the blog post further reads.

The feature is currently rolling out for everyone in the US, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and will come to more countries soon, including India.

In the meantime, Meta is also introducing a new feature to help users manage their recommendation feed. " We want to give people more control over the content they see on Instagram, so we're introducing new features that allow people to tell us what content they don't want recommended to them," says Meta.

The new recommendation feature will allow users to -

  • Choose and hide multiple pieces of content in the explore section that they are not interested in.
  • Hide recommended posts which contain specific words. You can avoid a list of words, emojis or hashtags so that related content will not appear in your explore feed.

Filtering the content will help Instagram analyse what you like and will further show content as per your interest. Users can access the new recommendation features in the Hidden Words section of Privacy settings.
