After multiple warnings, Microsoft is finally pulling security support for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 starting Jan - Times Now

Windows 7
On January 10, Microsoft will stop providing security patches and technical support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The statement comes just as Microsoft Edge 109, the final version to support the out-of-date operating systems, is made available.

On these devices, the browser will still work, but no crucial security updates or new features will be offered. On January 10, support for WebView2, a programme that enables programmers to embed web content into their apps, will also end.

Edge isn't the only significant search engine quitting Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, either. Google stated in October that it would stop supporting Chrome for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on February 7. Windows 8.1 and Windows 7-powered devices will become more susceptible to bugs, malware, and other internet security threats. Additionally, these PCs won't be able to access the most recent features and capabilities offered by the business.

The deadline provides consumers some time to upgrade their workstations before the security dangers associated with using an out-of-date operating system and browser, which are expected to be present on about 100 million devices as recently as 2021. In October of last year, a Lansweeper study of 27 million Windows systems found that more PCs were running Windows XP, 7, or 8 than Windows 11.

On the other hand, Microsoft provided users plenty of advance notice when it announced that support for Windows 7 will cease in 2020. Updates will only be sent to those who paid for an additional three years of extended security fixes.

“Microsoft will not be offering an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 8.1. Continuing to use Windows 8.1 after January 10, 2023, may increase an organization's exposure to security risks or impact its ability to meet compliance obligations,” the company stated.

Customers who need to use legacy Microsoft products after their support has finished have one last option: the Extended Security Update (ESU) programme. For up to three years beyond the conclusion of the product's extended support period, it retains crucial and significant security updates. This suggests that users of Windows PCs who still have machines running the Windows 8.1 operating system will no longer get essential security upgrades to safeguard their computers and data from online attacks.

Now is a good time to install Windows 10 or 11 on a computer running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft advises upgrading the device with a more recent model by January 10 if that isn't possible to avoid any potential security problems.
