MICROSOFT is finally winding down support for its virtual assistant Cortana on Windows. The company will pull support from the standalone app of the assistant in late 2023. This implies a user will have to switch to alternative means like the AI-laden features in Windows and Edge to get work done otherwise assigned to Cortana.
However, the move only impacts Windows users at the moment. On the operating system, rather than clicking on the Cortana icon to launch the app, users can check out other options such as new Bing, Windows Copilot and more.

The productivity assistant will continue to stay accessible in "Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms," the company said in a support page. "Instead of clicking the Cortana icon and launching the app to begin using voice, now you can use voice and satisfy your productivity needs through different tools," it added. Microsoft highlights four means that can act as a substitute for Cortana on Windows.
Voice access: The feature in Windows 11 will allow users to write text with the help of voice. A user can open and multitask between apps, surf the internet and read and compose letters via this. It works offline and uses "advanced speech recognition" to help the user.
New Bing: AI-powered Bing needs no introduction. It can answer complex user queries and deliver conversational answers.
Microsoft 365 Copilot and Windows Copilot: Both new functionalities use AI to transform textual input into productive output. Windows Copilot is in preview for the latest Windows.
Coming back to Cortana, according to XDA Developers, the productive assistant debuted on Windows Phone 8.1 in 2014 to compete with Apple's voice assistant Siri. Next year, it was released on Windows and was heavily infused into Microsoft products on similar lines like what the company is doing with Copilot presently.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is heavily focusing resources towards AI systems to integrate this emerging technology into its product catalogue.
